Insulating Attic Stairs

Any suggestions how to insulate attic stair openings and general attic access hatches? I have taken a couple of infrared shots of some attic stairs and there is a huge leak there. I don't like the insulation within the steps because it is crushed and also comes apart when you walk up. I have also seen the Attic Tent. I am not sure about that either.

I thought about making my own cover with styrofoam but I have not found the right thickness yet.

11/2'' rigid foam, cut a fabricate to fit your opening, glue it with caulking.

Re: Insulating Attic Stairs

One of my gripes is building inspectors who pass ordinary attic stairs in garages that aren't fire rated. They'll type X the whole garage, then just have a flimsy luan lid on the attic stairs.
