Re: Foam Or Stuff.

Foam everything. Doors, windows, whatever. Can go to 12#, bad A stuff and requires bracing until it's set. Near bulletproof after that.

I've always used foam, but my crew gives me a hard time. They like stuffing. I don't get it.

Re: Foam Or Stuff.

For doors and windows I use the non expanding spray foam so it doesnt bow the window flange or door jamb.

For thin spaces in between studs on exterior walls I use the expandable spray foam.

Not to derail the thread, but on a related note: What's the name of the "system" where the foam comes in a container that looks like a BBQ grill propane tank, and has a wand sort of like the exterminators use to spray for bugs? I'd sorta like to look into getting a rig like that for draft stopping my top and bottom plate penetrations.

There are several types. Search "Foam Insulation Kits" and you'll find them.

Re: Foam Or Stuff.

All depends for us. On new construct I size RO enough to leave a nice gap to get the plastic tube in the store bought foam cans in without problems. On my spray foam gun that uses the screw in foam cans I made a tip out of copper water line and smashed it with a hammer to try on replacement windows that have tight gaps around them...it worked okay on some, and others it made a mess. So for all my replacment windows I stuff them with batt. In all these years I have never once had a call back for air coming in so there's no changing my mind that stuffed works every bit as good as foam as far as stopping 99% of air infiltration.

But the foam is faster..even though it costs 5x's as much to do it that way

I foam all doors and windows. IMO, if somewhere down the line water starts to get in that fiberglass will be like a wet rag in the wall.

Re: Foam Or Stuff.

I like stuffing them.
The insulation can be free;
On new construction, take a couple bags of the cut-offs from the insulation installers. On most sites here ,these are always discarded, already bagged, when the job is done.
They're usually long thin strips and easily installed.
If you know an insulation contractor, have him set some aside for you.
Having it on hand is one less stop for me on the way to the job site.
So you save twice, time and material.

Re: Foam Or Stuff.

We stuff them too. Maybe old fashioned way but done right very effective and a lot less messy.
No reason for it to get wet any more than anything else. If you got wet you got troubles anywho.
