Basments

here in central WI the inspectors cant make up their mind on how to ins basement walls. we put 1" foam on the outside and when we build basement walls.....1st they wanted craft faced, then it was poly on the concrete side of the wood, then it was poly on both sides of the wood
now its just unfaced ins. not many people around here can afford the spray ins.

just wondering what you guys/gals use
any problems with mold with any of the ways we insulate?

its mostly sand around here with a little clay in spots. so the water really doesnt pool up next to the found wall. drain tile inst required either, so the walls dont get very wet or even at all.

dang it. i spelled basements wrong on the title. lol oh well

Re: Basments

No problems that i see, i would however avoid the poly on both sides scenario. G

Re: Basments

I do all my basement remodels with as little organic material as possible.
6 mil vapor, steel studs, unfaced fiberglass insulation, Dens-Armor fiberglass drywall, fiberglass mesh tape, etc.
There will never be a mold issue without organic materials.

Way back before my ICF days we would hang 15 lb tar paper with holes (slots) cut in it, frame it, fiberglass, super 6 poly and drywall

Re: Basments

In my own basement I used metal z studs. Cant remember what exactly they are called but the overhead profile looks sorta like a z with no angle on the vertical part. Rented a gun that shot case hardened T nails threw the stud into the poured basement walls. 2 ft. centers. 1" blueboard in between studs. The outside part of the z overlaps the blueboard. Drywall screwed to that.

As Gene has stated.........Poly on two faces is a great design for a Moisture Trap and Mold Proliferation! I do not get that Building Code!

Re: Basments

anybody have any info/links about finishing off a basement with a 'dirt' floor? I'm doing a remediation job and will eventually bring in a contractor that deals with this but I would like to educate myself on the finished product. I know one option is lay a cement pad but would like to know more about laying the layers of 'plastic' and insulating the walls...I know its not just plastic, can someone educate myself on the process?

thx.

Dig down to desired height.

6 mill vapor over the dirt, bring up 6inch's on all sides (To tie into wall vapor barrier), wire mesh, concrete, vibrated, screed, leveled, finished.

Start your interior framing, and insulating.

There are so many different methods of insulating basements. We mostly, but 6 mill vapor barrier over the inside foundation walls, only over the parts that are below grade (Anything above grade gets no vapor barrier). Build 2x4 or 2x6 walls, 1/2" out from the foundation wall, to give a breathing space for moisture behind the walls, insulate with batt insualtion, drywall it in.

Re: Basments

the latest method around here (Upstate NY) is to drill about a 1 1/2" hole in the concrete block and fill the voids with expanding foam, they charge about .72 SF
