By being a professional, targeting a certain clientel niche, and building up a top-notch referral base. There have always been students and illegals in one form or another for as long as I can remember. After 26 yrs painting and 18 of having my own business, I'm not going to start worrying about them now. When you start spending time looking over your shoulder then you arent looking ahead.

Re: Your In Trouble.

Their presence does not affect my business one bit, I am in a different class of painting entirely. Besides they both do a great service by weeding out the quality conscious clients from the...well "other" ones.

However I do get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when I see college kids getting pimped out like that. I would rather see a rising college student working at McDonald's, than traversing a 3 story roof with a 10/12 pitch covered in 23 year old cedar shakes only to paint a 3'x3' area of chimney!

Re: Your In Trouble.

I was a student painter years ago, for 2 years. My boss was old school painting.
We used tarps, kept brushes clean and wrapped after use, boxed all our paints before starting, scraped and oil primer and wiped every exterior surface with rough cloth before painting.
Interiors were patched, washed and primed before painting. He wasn't the low bidder and we worked on a lot of expensive homes.
The ad in this thread hits on 2 buttons.
1. Your helping a student?
2. Its gonna be cheaper.
Everyone was a carpenter in college and everyone can paint. Right?

Nice going silvertree...by using the words "cheaper" to describe the prices on the bid, and "expensive" to describe the homes that were bid...you just exploded the universe.

In response Wisepainter
I don't believe student painters are cheaper, you get a cheaper job maybe, but not a better job. I see these guys at all the home shows.
College pro-College Painters and the like.
I meant my boss hired me but made us work to his high standards, I assume all of us do that with our new guys.
I'm from Connecticut and the estates and better homes tended to hire professionals, which my boss was.

The advertising here for these guys makes it sound like your helping a student, if you believe that then you believe that painting isn't a profession.
It also makes people think (student=less money) for the job.

I never hire these guys, I work with real painters, not guys that paint. And yeah, I know the difference.
