Wood Paneling Question Guys
In My Old House There Is Wood Paneling Everywhere. My First Question Is: Can U Texture The Paneling Using Joint Compound If U Prime It First? If I Can Then Should I Fill In The Grooves And Let Them Dry Before I Texture? Also In One Room There Is Sheetrock On The 2 Outside Walls And Wood Paneling On The Other 2 Walls. If Can Texture It, Will The Paneling Match The Sheetrock Good. Thanks.

Re: Wood Paneling Question Guys
Hope you don't mind me adding one in to this subject... If you're going to primer over the wood paneling, what's the best primer to use?

Re: Wood Paneling Question Guys
In my basement, the paneling moved enough between studs when you would push on it that I would be concerned with the drywall mud popping off of the paneling if some leaned against it.
For primer, I recommend something like Zinnser coverstain, sand the walls first. A good waterborne will stick, but there might be some bleed through with the waterborne primer. |

Re: Wood Paneling Question Guys
yea, one of my friends who is a painter told me i might have problems with the mud popping out. My house is about 50 or 60 years old. i beleive the paneling is nailed onto toungue and groove and not studs. Is there anything else i could use that would stick to it? I really don't want to have to sheetrock the rest of it right now. How about the texture addive u add to paint? I would really like to hide the grooves in the paneling so it would match the sheetrock. Would the fast dry mud stick better? Just found this cool website yesterday.

Re: Wood Paneling Question Guys
Bondo will stick better than mud. Use an oil or shellac based primer.
It seems to me to be about the same amount of work as rocking.

Re: Wood Paneling Question Guys
I've got a room in my house with knockdown over paneling.......use a good oil based primer to lock in anything in the paneling, then just mud or whatever over it. This room has been like this for 8 yrs, painted, and then re-painted this past year....no probs at all!! Hope this helps...

I agree about just putting up new rock. Have to be easier and maybe cheaper.

Re: Wood Paneling Question Guys
I have had excellent results using XIM UMA primer. That stuff really grips. Then I usually finish coat the paneling with BM dulamel eggshell 2 coats. Did this at a few customers houses (usually in basements) and my own house. I really wanted to joint compound the grooves to make the paneling match the sheetrock but thought it would give me too many problems in the future so we live with it the way it is and i cant say I even mind it much.

Could you just flip the panelling over, and start from there?

Re: Wood Paneling Question Guys
Depends on how thick the paneling is and how it's attached. If it's thin paneling and not solidly attached to evenly spaced studs, it will move around cracking the compound on the joints.
My preference would be to re-rock. I've never liked the outcome of painted paneling unless you skim every square inch. PS. Although you can use compounds and bondo, you're taking a chance. Sheetrock has to be taped on all joints, the same would apply to paneling. |

Re: Wood Paneling Question Guys
Bigbrew. Go to your paint supply store (Ben Moore or Sherw Wiilliams and ask for the wallpaper that's made to go over paneling. You put this stuff on and it spans the voids and you're ready to paint !!! HD or Lowe's will not have this product.
