Winter Prime

Going to be replacing some cedar lap siding.
I always use Cover Stain to back prime for the turnaround/ handling factor.
With the weather now, this stuff won't get painted til spring (HO's "spring" probably May-June).
Will Cover Stain hold up til then if I use it to prime the face too?
Should I tell him to re-prime before he paints?
Also gonna re-use some existing (once upon a time)galvanized corners, as I can't get anything close to a match.
Any ideas for priming them?
Talking hi temps mid 40's and down to low 30's at night.
Thanks.

Re: Winter Prime

cant you do it in his garage and paint it before you install it? maybe set up a little salamander until the paint has had a few hours to dry then go back next day and install? then you dont have to worry about it

Gonna be enough grief finding space to do the 1 hour turnaround thing with the Cover Stain.
His garage is worse than mine...
'cept mine is stuff, his is junk.

Re: Winter Prime

I think you will have to reprime in the spring. I do not recall the exact time frame, but I think manufacturers want it topcoated in 1 month or reprimed.

That's what I thought.
I just want to know the new cedar won't get screwed up in the mean time.

Re: Winter Prime

I do not think the cedar would get screwed up, just the potential for topcoat issues if it is not reprimed. Just for the record, this is not firsthand experience just what I remember reading somewhere. I would probably go with a slower drying primer for the face, if it were up to me.

Re: Winter Prime

Yup, be nice if it would be sunny and 70º for a couple of days too!

Hold up?...well...it might not fall off....
Should be good enough to protect it though..at least somewhat
Depends on the weather as to how well...not much you can do about that
Should I tell him to re-prime before he paints?
Oh yeah, that'll be a given

Most manufacturers recommend a week max...some a few weeks max...
Any more and you'll want to reprime

At these temps, the oil won't dry till spring anyway...lol

There's no low-temp oil (that I know of)
