White over dark blue painted trim
once again forced to paint a little to take a job(drywall new addition/basement)
Some casing/windows/one side of a door that need painted white in an existing room. Looked today and found it is currently a very dark blue. Been using Satin impervo lately over fresh start, but not real sure the fresh start will be enough over an ugly dark blue...
Any advise? Would I be better off dealing with the fumes and using BIN then impervo over that?
Appreciate the help

go with two maybe even three coats of primer, Bin isn't going to do anything extra as far as coverage, Bin is good if your trying to seal in a water stain smoke damage, going over glossy surfaces etc. but its hiding properties aren't any better than a good primer

I disagree with my esteemed neighbor to the north
BIN's hiding works well enough to use when turning dark brown stained trim white
I'm sure it would work for blue
Even SWP's Prep Rite (latex) has allowed me to turn a formerly black ceiling white again with one thick coat of primer, and two Murescos

It will be nice to have my Cape back
Going out to dinner after 5PM
Not waiting for hours at the movie theater
Not having to do my errands with only right hand turns
Bringing the dog to the beach....

It'll take two coats of Impervo over the BIN, yeah for sure
And that Impervo is good stuff
But I'd recommend two coats Impervo anyway

Well, allow another Masshole to weigh. (Welcome Bean, I've read you before ?, on another forum in a different galaxy?)
Although I don't paint no mo fo $$, I do have recent experience with Satin Impervo Waterborne (thanks to all you guys and PWG for that advice).
First, Will, are you using Waterborne or Alkyd ?
I was covering a medium blue with a custon off white in pastel base. Primed with Fresh Start latex I also tinted - same as Finish. Two coats of primer did not cover completely (although they were both sanded). Needed AT LEAST two SI finish coats. Three looks pissa!
IMO, you need PIGMENT, not necessarily a stain blocker. If B.I.N. is your choice, ad an ounce or so of white to the gallon, or even a hint of orange as orange is the complimentary color to blue ("opposite" on the color wheel.)
Now, all you with more up to date knowledge than I. Doesn't it matter if the existing paint is latex or oil? Won't B.I.N. (shellac - ie alcohol solvent) have a different reaction on Latex than on oil?

haven't done it yet, was finishing up drywall in other areas today. might tackle it tomorrow or monday. still have some drywall repairs in other rooms.. stupid clumsy people with 2x4s.
To some of the other posts.. I am using the waterborne impervo, I do always put 2 coats on top of whatever primer is used under it anyway. If the bin looks to not be covering very well I guess I could throw on another coat of that before the impervo as well. Hoping for only one, hate the smell of bin.
Keeping my fingers crossed.. Although if I do an awful job maybe they will finally tell me I don’t have to paint?
thanks again guys

just an update.. after light sanding to get junk off i hit it with the first coat of bin and i was really suprised how well it covered. by the time i was around the room with a couple windows and doors(yea im slow) the first window cashing was pretty much dry.. so i hit everything with a light second coat while i was there. was pleased with how it covered, thought i might end up having to put another coat of freshstart or something on when i first started.
put on the 2nd impervo coat today over the bin and everyone seems pleased with how it turned out.
thanks again guys
