When To Use A Sander?

I have been lucky enough that I haven't needed to sand anything since I have been painting, however I think my luck is about to run out.

When do you guys normally sand something before painting it?

What type of sander do you use? Perhaps you can give me a model number of something so I can look it up, as I never used a sander before. Would you sand the wall after you primed it? I got a lot of questions cuz Im starting to branch out more, but i just want to learn from the pro's

Re: When To Use A Sander?

I use a sander when I need to sand something.

Really though, I have a 1/4 sheet finish sander, porter cable.... an orbital, porter cable and a 1/2 sheet B&D. Mostly for wood. If a wall is flat with no texture, I sand between coats. Always sand doors, always sand and seal stain, always sand after primer when removing wall paper. Textured walls and ceilings you can't sand... so basically, if it's flat, sand it.

Re: When To Use A Sander?

I've got a makita 6" disc, a porter cable orbital, and dewalt palm sander.

Sounds like you might need a pole sander too...after all, when I read your post, that's the first one I thought of...

Stubborn cabinet door finishes

That's for "massive material removal"
Usually a door strip or deck/floor/steps where the big machines don't go
I have used it on cabinet doors, but it does require a delicate touch

Haha.. ya can see it now...

Slick "Umm... I sorta finished the cabinet doors....."
HO "Great! Whatcha mean sorta?"
Slick "Well... we need to cut out the middle of them and install a nice glass front...."
HO "What?"
Slick "Well... I sorta made a few holes anyhow and it should look good...."

I rarely ever paint poles, nevermind having to sand them...
