what would you bid ?

Just got a chance to bid a repaint for a small hotel, with the intention that they will need more work soon.

1. Color change from salmon to a light chocolate low sheen eggshell finish.
2. Will bid for 2 coats.
3. Areas- 2 bathrooms wall only,Fitness room walls only, 3 stairwells 3 stories each with metal handrails. Walls are in good condition.
4.All walls have a knockdown texture.
SW low-sheen eggshell for walls and oil for the handrails.

Bid-$3600.00
This is short notice but any input on my price I need to get a bid to them today.
Thanks again for any help.

Never take this into consideration when bidding any job.

I would like to reiterate what PWG said
Never, ever, let the promise of "more work" affect your bid
First off, it's mostly BS
Second, if in the off-chance it's not a lie, if you underbid the first job to get more work, what do you think they are going to say when you charge regular price for the second job
"Buh-Bye you're too high"

The only thing I hear more often than "...and if I hire you I've got more work" is (from homeowners) "I could do it myself but...."...lol...

As for the price, that is going to vary greatly by area and your specific business needs (costs)
Someone else's numbers are not going to work for you
Well, they might, but that would be luck
Not a good way to run and grow a business

Personally, I've found small hotel mgrs. to mostly be some of the cheapest....people out there (I've got a ton of them out here)
They are looking for low, low, low
Below what I can operate on
If I'm going to go broke, I'd rather do it sitting on my couch than working my tail off
They can wake up a drunk out in the dumpster out back and give him $40 and a brush
The ones that do want quality work, they are either willing to pay...or not

My point is, if you figured $3600 was what you need for the job, stick by it
If they question the price, sell it as to why it is what it is
Tell them you don't intend to be the cheapest, but explain why you are a better choice than the ones that bid cheaper
You'll either get the job, or not

If they are looking for $1200 tops, you probably wont get it anyway
If they were willing to spend $4600, they'll be tickled pink
There's not much you can do about either

Thanks Pro and Slick,I agree about the promise of additional work I hear that all the time. People just don't understand what it takes to do a good job and the costs that we Painter's/owners have to run a business.

Can't know for sure about sizes but stand by it, he can always get his brother inlaw to do it, (slop oil paint all over the stairwells).
I've come after $10 hr workers, they shouldn't off been fired , they should have been shot, paint was everywhere.
Good Luck

I'm going after a 400 plus apartment complex in a couple of days. just working up the details. Of course even in the high end neighborhood this is, these corp. owners can be as cheap as those motel owners.

Tip: I'd be cautious about the materials... knockdown on the walls, is going to suck up your paint budget really quick.

Tip: Your walls space divided by a typical 10 x 10 means your are painting the equivalant of about 16 rooms + the hand rail.

Quick thoughts.
Price per room walls (remember knockdown too) 250-350.ish/room (add for heights or difficulties?)
Gallon per room = $50
Let's say $350 for fun x 16 of those that's about $5600.ish
then add the rails (1 - 2 bucks a lft) or a day and a half labour (two coats?)...

...hmmmm, can't say for certain, but I think you might be low here...

Low isn't the word... dirt cheap is the word.

Hmmm...I wasn't thinking it was that much wall
I suspect you are low also
Are you sure you can make money on that?
I assume those stairwells aren't going to be cake

I would start considering that job only if you doubled that price, you must be pretty slow to do it that cheap. Especially painting stupid hand rails in a commercial setting. (btw use oil on those). How are you going to reach up those high walls? scaffold? I am doubting youre gonna get to just spray those walls. I would only do it at that price if it was new construction. 1 to 2 days spraying walls. 1 to 2 days spraying unassembled handrail peices.
