Weird Color Combination?

I've got a question that may be stupid but here I go. I've painted walls flat Swiss Coffee and doors and baseboards semi-gloss white before but I have a customer who wants just the opposite, semi-gloss Swiss coffee doors and baseboards and flat white walls. For some reason I think this won't look right. Is the customer right, is this a common color combination?

Re: Weird Color Combination?

If that's what they want. Just make sure you put in your contract that anything they want redone because they don't like the combination is at their cost.

Re: Weird Color Combination?

I wouldn't do it in my house, but I'd do it in a customer's house.

One time I painted a room using the color that the customer had chosen. After I was all done the customer came home and asked me why I would paint the room that color and said that I should have called her. I told her that I was color blind. She then asked me how I could paint if I was color blind. I told her that it was easy, If the color on the label matched the color that she selected then I was good to go.

Color blind...

A friend had some designer convince him to paint his interior railing, balusters, all trim, etc in flat enamel. I told him it will look like primer, but he went for it. Since then, folks occasionally ask him if/when he'll finish painting.

It's their money. If they want purple stripes it's what they are hiring you for. I will offer suggestions for whatever I am working on but then do what they want unless there's a liability issue.

Re: Weird Color Combination?

I'm working on one of those right now.

This is the top

And it'll go on this base.

It'll look odd out of context. But in the room the trim is the color of the base so it'll fit right in.

Re: Weird Color Combination?

It is going into a round room. Or at least a semi-circular room.

Cream colored legs would have really set the top off. But not everyone has the same taste and that's why the color books are so thick.

All you really need is a good color wheel. It will show you 2, 3, and 4 color combinations that work together.

Re: Weird Color Combination?

OP, is it the “Swiss Coffee” color that bothers you or would any colored trim with white walls be considered “weird”?

We’ve flipped the colors several times. I think it works well.

Re: Weird Color Combination?

Swiss coffee sounds like a tan to me. That and white would look good in any combination. I'd mention eggshell or satin would be better for cleaning on the walls instead of flat.

Re: Weird Color Combination?

I don't have any white walls and all my woodwork is a dark tan in my own house. The basic white woodwork gets boring.

Re: Weird Color Combination?

If your experience tells you that it might look weird, but the customer still insists, then you might want to paint just one wall, and then ask the customer if that's still what they want.

Warm them, then paint it. You don't have to look at it everyday, lol. If it's extreme (like these) I tell the client in advance it will be 4x as much to undo it.

The Swiss Coffee trim and doors has a yellowish tint to it and the brite white walls kinda makes the trim and door look dirty. The homeowner is out of town and pics don't give the correct contrast so I guess I'll just wait until he gets back to see what he says.
