Vinyl Shutters
Howdy folks !
I have a customer who wants their shutters painted. Some people say you can and some say you shouldn't. I'm not quite sure what to tell them. Any suggestions ? If so, what procedure? TSP, prime, than paint ? Thanks in advance Marko |

Re: Vinyl Shutters
If the shutters were pre-painted, I'd say go for it and re-paint. If the shutters were factory finished, they need to live with the color or buy new ones. MOST are not paintable and will peel in sheets when the sun hits them...been there and its not good

Re: Vinyl Shutters
back in circa 1990 when I was managing a small Mom & Pop Paint and Paper store, a Calif rep (Dave Thompson) said that 100% acrylic would be appropriate for vinyl siding and shutters as long as the paint was not DARKER than the original color. Something about the sun heating up the darker color and causing it to fail.
That's HIS story and he's sticking to it. |

Re: Vinyl Shutters
Yes... you can paint vinyl shutters... no primer needed... latex only... 100% acrylic...

Yup, you probably shouldn't Might stick...might not.... Now it's probably easier (and more likely to go smoothly) if you remove them and spray them Of course, the labor to remove and install would be the same for these...or new ones And of course, the paint (latex-no primer), and labor to paint them...two coats... And...theres no warranty (guaranty it'll stick-gotta wave that) Usually makes the cost of just getting new ones installed look pretty attractive (Usually I don't get one of these jobs unless it's a custom color match)

Re: Vinyl Shutters
I think it depends on what type of vinyl they are made of. I've seen some that say they can be painted and some that say they can't be. I had some on my house that I wanted a different color and painted them with an acrylic paint it it stuck like nobodys business. They were subsequently damaged and I ended up replacing them with a different kind and I think that the new ones are not supposed to be painted.

Re: Vinyl Shutters
Guys I just painted 18 vinyl shutters on the front of a house a couple months ago - from a dark red or maroon to a earthy-slate color. I dusted them down and layed one coat SW SuperPaint on 'em! They face west so they get plenty of afternoon sun and they appear to be doing very well.
Next year? (YIKES - after reading this thread!)

Re: Vinyl Shutters
I had an estimate for a lady who had vinyl shutters she asked me to give her a price to repaint them since she had had them painted the year before, well all the paint the other painter put on was peeling off from the afternoon sun beating down on them this guy also did her garage door too. and it was peeling. I did some checking about plastic and vinyl, Krylon came out with a paint just for plastic this year, I don't know if they will have the color you need but check them out. I also got this lady prices for new shutters (wood) and she didn't like the price to much money she said. so I think she found some other painter to do the job cheap, But she'll more then likely have to repaint them again.

Re: Vinyl Shutters
I have done it tons of times, wipe the shutter down with alcohol and spray them with latex. I always give atleast a 2 year warranty on my work and have never been called back to fix a shutter. Shutter colors are pretty limited so i have been asked to paint them quite often.

Problem is that being in the 16 oz spray cans, it would not be suitable for paintinmg multiple sets of shutters. BUT the stuff did work for us on the resin table. |
