Unusual Problem
Mostly deal with older [50+ years] homes with wood siding, where HO's understand wood is a natural product that has character.
Been asked to bid on a contemporary home [less than 12years old] with western red cedar siding that the original painters applied a hard [epoxy me thinks] filler at all butt joints. These joints are now failing and require removal of paint and filler prior to fill, prime, and finish. After doing a couple of sample joints to prepare an accurate proposal [there's 500+ butt joints on this home] discovered that some joints are over 1/4". HO isn't content with caulking butt joints and losing the clean/invisible joints that he had prior to failure. Current situation has started to allow water damage around nail holes [hard filler also] and while I want to provide the aesthetic qualities the HO desires I want to ensure the longest lasting finish possible. What would you use?

Re: Unusual Problem
Wood moves, so will good caulk.
You already know that there's no "magic" solution. Your problem is to convince the HO. The system he liked, failed in 12 years. Most modern caulking compounds will go 30 years or more. Good luck

Re: Unusual Problem
Use your magic estwing wand, one tap on the head and say you're using caulk.
