Trim Out Of Order, Need Some Advice
Hi guys, found this forum tonight and it seems really great. Already have something I would like to ask and get some advice on too
![]() On a job now with a bit of a timing issue, isn't an entire house but enough sq that can't just be knocked out whatever I feel like. So the main issue is, the trim and casing hasn't arrived yet so it obviously isn't installed. Walls are ready and I don't have squat to do right now. Of course coming up I have a ton of jobs lined up so I really wanted to get this job done next week or I am going to have to be killing myself trying to get it done with all the other work that needs done at the same time. So my only real idea was to get in there now, paint all the walls. Have the trim delivered to me, prime, spray 2 coats and have it installed after it's finished. Was even thinking about having it glued in place so I didn't have to fill nail holes(I know this is evil, but everyone seems ok with it and the schedule is hurting) if that could be done I was hoping I would be able to come in and just do some minor touch ups on joints instead of an entire coat on everything. Anyone ever done it like this? I do mostly new construction so I typically spray trim after install then do walls. Very rarely have I ever painted trim last, and never tried to skip an entire coat. The carpenter said he was willing to do whatever, he would setup clamps and padding so he wouldn't make any nail holes if I wanted. He's being nice because the trim issue is his fault, because he kind of forgot to order it all. Yea, don't ask.. ![]() Appreciate any thoughts on this or other ideas Paul |

Re: Trim Out Of Order, Need Some Advice
Sounds like you pretty much got it worked out. The only thing is, i don't know about the glueing of the trim other than that sounds like a plan.
I have followed behind some wood butchers without all that much common sense. Those kind of wood butchers would have problems finding the studs for crown, wainscott ect ect..

Re: Trim Out Of Order, Need Some Advice
If they don't glue and they do nail it, I could still save steps by getting it ready. But I would have a to do a full coat after I fill nail holes/sanded down. I would really like to avoid that if I can but I'm up in the air about it..
Worst case if I do.. Anyone recommend any fillers that can take just 1 single topcoat and not show/discolor? |

I'd have em nail it, doesn't take all that long to finish already finished trim... we do it all the time.

Re: Trim Out Of Order, Need Some Advice
I helped out a friend several years ago that always did his work the way you were describing. He painted the walls first then primed and finished the trim down. Once installed he used light spackling, sanded, caulked and painted one more full coat on trim. He taped off hinges and sprayed doors up. It turned out ok for what was being paid.

Re: Trim Out Of Order, Need Some Advice
Thanks for the replies guys. Think I might just have it nailed up, spackle and give it the one full coat.
I was worried the spackle would show with only 1 top coat, but looks like that works for everyone else so I will give it a shot. I haven't filled anything that wasn't primed in years. And yes, I agree about how awful it would be to remove glued trim ![]() Anyone have a fav lightweight spackle? |
