Touching Up Bubbled Paint
Did a real heavy strip on a deck earlier today and despite my rinsing and plastic, the chem was too strong.
A few small areas of yellow paint on the siding around the deck bubbled up and peeled off. The house was painted less than a year ago and its just white paint underneath How do I touch these up? Its only maybe in a 10 sq foot area. Customer has the paint used on the house, but should I prime first and then paint over? Should I sand the edges where the yellow peeled off? It looks like just one coat of yellow was put on, but I dont want it to be visible where the layers of paint will be.

looks like you have the right idea. Sand it smooth, prime it up and paint it down. Hopefully the paint will still match. I did a touch up on a paint job that was over a year old and the paint matched perfectly.

Re: Touching Up Bubbled Paint
how far should I prime over the edge? It doesn't look like the painters who did the yellow coat primed when putting it over the existing white. Do I just prime the exposed area or go a few inches over each peeled spot? Will the paint build up be too noticeable with a primer?

Re: Touching Up Bubbled Paint
to make it looking first class you would need to prime bare wood only, then fill up and feather away the thick edge, then sand and touch-up with the primer again and then apply your top coat

Re: Touching Up Bubbled Paint
I would sand and feather the peeling spots, then prime, then touch up. Make sure you get the previous top coat paint mixed very well, so that it will have the best chance of touching up. Since it was your fault, do what ever you got to do to fix it.

Re: Touching Up Bubbled Paint
Prime against the edges of the paint. Let dry, then start sanding on it. If some primer works its way under the paint, it will make the paint a little more brittle, easier to feather sand.
If the paint's only a year old, it might gum before it feathers very well. Last edited by Joewho; 07-10-2007 at 02:31 AM. |
