Tinted Poly

I stain a front door and the homeowner said it was to light. I reapplied a second coat of stain the following day and homeowner said it was still to light. The next day I tinted some poly and now the homeowner says it is to dark. How can I strip off the poly without damaging the stain. Can I rub lacquer thinner or xylene over the tinted poly to make it lighter? Thanks guys

Re: Tinted Poly

Tough one,

I would think a chemical remover would be your best bet, a lot of them advertise that they take out stains, but from all the complaints I've heard working at a hardware store they never do.

They are messy, you could try sanding but you will probably end up eating into the wood in some places, but if you still have the stain you could stain those areas.

Re: Tinted Poly

You could strip it off with Bix, but would need to stain it again.

Re: Tinted Poly

Try denatured alcohol and steel wool, rub it in lightly and it will remove a light amount of the top coat and some of the stain.
