Texturing Concrete Block Wall


Any suggestions on what material and proper steps that need to be taken to texture a concrete wall in a garage? I would like to do a knockdown or swirl texture. I've never done this on a block wall. What material is suggested for this?

mason job, stucco, or if you are good at plastering, you could do a hard coat eifs system

Forgot to mention also, block has existing paint on it as well.
