Texture

Any pointers or inside tips on orange peel texture?

What are they and where can I get, one of those little gadgets that looks like an old time bug sprayer? For touching up texture?

Since being here, I've seen people spray the texture on thin enough so that there isn't much knock down needed. They told the HO's it would get sanded when dry. And in a couple of spots it did.

I sprayed out the finished product, no backrolling. Is it necessary to backroll? If so, what cirmumstances?

I'm not sure what the GC will want, but I want to be prepared.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Texture

Id backroll, else you will have a problem touching up later. The bugsprayers can be found at drywall stores. Good luck!

You're not getting off that easy slingers. What size tips are you using to spray paint with? Since I did mostly smooth walls, can you point me in the right direction with texture? Is there a certain tip and mixture to get the consistency so it will flop on the wall and lay down to an orange peel? What is your secret mix? Not using store bought are you? I've never done it. Popcorn and other textures, but not orange peel. And not on new construction. Am I going to get stuck walking around on plastic all the time? I hate that. What do you do with the floors?

Re: Texture

Heh... meanie.. calling me out and such. I use a 617 on peel, if your talking about actually texturing the walls.... well, thats a different story. I use a texture machine, but for small jobs I use a hand held, like a spraying mantis, for a good knockdown about 1/4 to 1, for an orange I go about 1/2 to 1.... depends on your ability really, texturing isnt hard but, it takes a bit of practice. Floors, heh, I normally dont worry about em til the time I have to lay tile...

Re: Texture

I was watching some guys use a machine (hand held hopper) to blow it on like orange peel, but it layed out like it was knocked down already.

Am I imagining things? Or is that the 1/4 to 1?

Thanks for the inside "tip". Appreciate it.

Re: Texture

Ya, the tips that come with the hopper and the mixture itself will determine what the finish looks like... say the handheld I use, medium tip and 1/4 to 1 will do an orange peel, small tip and 1/2 will do a knockdown, etc. Basically there are three sizes, the mixture and the size will determine what the outcome looks like.. just practice at home a few times. The handhelds are a little tricky since you have to mix a little thinner to cover well on the top half of the wall, so your closer in the work up top, and further below.... if you get my drift. In fact.. a basic peel is somewhere in these posts under a job I did for a wildlife preserve....

Man did I just contradict myself or what.. heh, ya the thinner the mix, the lighter the texture, knock down you want thicker so you can .... knock it down.

Re: Texture

Oh.. I should warn you, orange peel and knock down are different across the country. In Delaware orange peel is fat tip, here in florida orange is smaller.. you should check the size compared to your hopper with your town. BTW I use a wallboard hand held.

Re: Texture

That makes things clearer. I've seen plenty of the knockdown around here, pretty standard, probably the bigger tip with a really thin mix and not too much coverage on the wall. Hopefully, anyway. Otherwise, I'll have to go thicker and actually run a trowel over it.

Looks like a false alarm anyway, the yahoo that talked me into coming to vegas is lead carpenter on the job. Wants me to go to AZ for a couple weeks and do int/ext on 3 homes. Problem is, he wants to run the whole show, meaning I can't talk to the GC. That might change, but i'm not going anywhere til I talk to the gc.

Ohh..sorry, I re-read your last reply....

Anyhow.....for any one else's use, this was my reply:

Go to the Drywall forum.

Do a search....I did a reply a little while back about this...
Even if you don't find my reply.....you may find someone elses.

That really is the best forum for your question...it is Drywall related.

.... We used a texture sprayer...small nozzle...with watered down compound....chocolate syrup consistency...

In New England...NO ONE knows how to do it, so we get alot of work because of this through referrals (sp.)...

After the sparying...use a sand pole to do a very quick sanding to knock down any splatters or 'peaks'...

good luck...
