SWP Buys MAB?? & Zinsser

Last week I went to my ladder store to buy some scaffolding.
They also sell Valspar (which i dont use)

I was talking to a few guys about paint and the one who works for
a commercial outfit here said that MAB paints was bought out by
Sherwin Williams.

Any one heard or any thoughts?

I dont use MAB, but I know many GC's and other painter's do.
Does this bother anyone?

I also dont use SW but this just deepens my dislike of SW.

Also heard that company who owns Zinnser was bought out buy SW.
Zinsser was my only primer(mostly) but if it is true, I will be changing
soon.

No slapping onto SW lovers.

Re: SWP Buys MAB?? & Zinsser

I used duration for the first time and it sucked, splatter all over
my paint is splatterless even the contractors grade quality

I got like 3% off for my cash account a whopping 6% when
I bought 3 gal OF the SAME COLOR!

Sorry, but I went in there asking about paint and the guy(yes he
is a salesman) knew less about it then me(i have been paintn for 1 year)

Anyway they are a chain and they dont give service like my
honest and reliable retailer--mom and pop shop selln Ben Moore and
Coronado get and where from 20 to 50% averaging 35% off retail

But SW is great! I just could care less about their paint and service

Re: SWP Buys MAB?? & Zinsser

I wasn't impressed with their duration either. However, saying their service is bad isn't necessarily true. Maybe the store you went to. My store has extremely knowledgeable employees. I give alot of my sucessful business to SW. Their employess are great at my store. Also, my discount sucked at first too. However, now that i spend lots more money there and have developed a great relationship with my rep, I can't find better prices anywhere without sacrificing quality. Mom and pop stores are great and would love to give business to them. However, my SW store is far more advanced in all areas than the local mom and pop operation.

Zinsser is owned by RPM Inc.. RPM is a HUGE conglomerate that owns a whole buttload of companies, like Zinsser, DAP, Wolman, Bondo, Rust-O-Leum, Testors, Varathane, Modern Masters, and then some. I've haven't heard nor seen any news of SW buying RPM. And I think it's highly doubtful they will. RPM is still steady buying up other corporations.

I've always preferred the staff at MAB (Newtown Square) over SW but even if the buyout is true, I doubt I would we would see any difference at retail level.

I completely agree with you Traditions

except your duration statement. I am very impressed with duration. I won't bore you with why, but I'm curious what aspects you didn't like and have you used both int. and ext.?

I love exterior duration. The interior seemed like it didn't flow as well as superpaint. I also didn't like that there is no flat. Their matte def. has a sheen to it.

Re: SWP Buys MAB?? & Zinsser

In the early 80's we started painting. There were some times in the past when I wasn't crazy about SW. Lately the managers really seem to have it together. Our prices sucked when we started also. They are pretty good now. Would love to cater to mom and pop stores but isnt feezable(sp) around here. There is one for BM and one for PPG, the are both out of the way and don't offer the same hours or service. As far as what they own, well lets be realistic. 98% ( a guess) of all garden tractors are made by MTD, think about Beatrice in the food lines, and the list goes on.

I agree with your statement RPM is huge I don't think that SW has the power to buy a co. that size.

Also I think SW has a service problem and is store based, but once your turned off of something its hard to go back.. I had a bad exp. in 1992 and went to BM and never looked back...

Re: SWP Buys MAB?? & Zinsser

I too have passed on SW, the store that is closest has bad customer service, i do not feel taken care of there. Every so often a SW sales rep comes and tries to get my business, i tell him why i dislike the store and he tells me how different it is now. Well i was in there Saturday buying a new 18 frame and the store was the same. Oh well they can not beat PPG's prices. SW did buy purdy, i wish i did not know that. LOL

Re: SWP Buys MAB?? & Zinsser

I know yhis is getting off topic. I wished there was a BM store closer. I like the products. Several yrs ago I was cussing at SW. Maybe we have just gotten lucky in this area, but it seems as if they are improving the managers. That is half the battle.

Paintstore.com has them price within reason. I can still get em at the mom and pops also. Usually a little high on price though.

Re: SWP Buys MAB?? & Zinsser

I gues my mom pop store is just special to me,

they give me great discounts, offer me great service, has referred
me many jobs, and of course they have helped my gain knowledge
about paint. They are painters themselves.

Also my father and grandfather stuck with them too.

HA!
