SW Industrial, Marine Coatings

I wanna use the "DTM 100% Acrylic water based industrial marie coating" (think its a high gloss) on some pre painted (SW pro mar eggshell) wood trim. Trim is new. And Ive used the DTM on metal many times never on wood. My thoughts are since its acrylic im good to go on wood. Unfortunatlay cant read the can cuz I normally use the specification side as my pour side (might rethink that). Neways would be nice to have confident answer for 2maro morning if anyone can help.

You could paint tomato soup on it too but that doesnt make it right. Go spend 20 bucks on the right product.

Well first of all its a great product, if its the right substrate which is my ? Plus I need the color to match metal rafter beams that I painted on the ceiling. Which I have a gallon left over. So you see it would make sense.

Re: SW Industrial, Marine Coatings

I would think it would be fine as a top coat. Call your local SW to double check.

DTM Acrylic is great.
Just because it can be applied Directly To Metal does not mean that it can only be put on metal.

i've used it on metal, masonry, and wood doors (properly primed though) and it was fine.

i guess it could be called Direct To Most any substrate

DTM is good on wood. My guy just painted my basement risers with it last week. Good stuff. I use it all the time for metal doors, etc..

Ya the trim came out great. The finish is superb, really easy coverage in 1 coat. I beleive the color was Crayon Clay or something. It matches old brick walls great.

I use this regularly. A little bit of a pain but the answers are usually much better than the answer from the store.

Re: SW Industrial, Marine Coatings

Never used it for anything other than metal doors. In Florida I had to paint 2 large metal safety doors on a Target, it was on the east side, and waiting for the sun to move was not an option...in Florida.
So I rolled as fast as I could but the doors were a cool 120 degrees by 7 a.m...in Florida. It was a hard fought battle but I was able to lay it on heavy and quickly manipulate it with a white foamy roller so there were few lap lines or boogers.
It was a draw actually.
What are the benefits of using it on wood?

Well the benefit for me was I had a spare gallon left over from some metal rafter beams we sprayed. And then we had a change in mind, and wanted to use the color on the trim for the same job. So it was either go get a gallon of some trim paint or use this. I think the benefits besides that are many though. The DTM is very durable and the sheen is perfect for trim. I would recomend this paint on any trim/ door, wood or metal. It goes on thick covers grain and imperfectoins. As u can tell im pretty happy about it. We finished the job and TGIF.

It is something I never would have thought of unless I was in your situation, but I can appreciate the durability it would offer.
I'm still not sure if I would consider using it as the primary topcoat for wood trim. For what it's worth I have been keeping my eye on the All Surface Enamel for the past few years and it performs well on wood.

Never had a problem with DTM, though it can be tough to apply on hot surfaces. I used to paint printing presses years ago when I first started my business, it was all brush and 3" foam rollers. Made hellaciously good money, but the traveling sucked.

FYI- I deal with a small SW outlet store in SW Michigan, I always ask them to research my questions through their network, they have many REAL experts in different fields. They have a commercial coatings rep that has provided me with some excellent information through the years.

I don't want to knock the store managers but I've noticed a lot of turnover through the years and am not comfortable them.

Many moons ago I worked as a sales person in an SW.
It is a dark and dirty place to make your way to the top.
My Boss was fired after 17 years because he was tired of the B.S. and began skimming products and money. Ended up behind the Home Depot paint counter as a Manager...then he realized he screwed up.

Dark, and dirty.
A company that has been successful for over 135 years knows how to keep things in their favor.
They were around before FORD and apparently will be around long after.
