SW A100 Alkyd Primer

I'm using SW A100 Alkyd primer on a new door for the house and I notice that the brush is dragging quite a bit. I haven't added anything to it. Temp in the house is about 76, and the humidity is about 70%.

Its fresh paint, recently shaken and stirred before and during use. Thoughts?

Seriously though, I haven't ever used it myself, but if it's dragging a bit, a splash of Penetrol will help. I don't recommend thinner for this either.
Or maybe just brush a little faster?

Draggin primer.. what kind of brush are you using? Oh, and how long does it take you to do one side of the door?

I'd have to say technique
It's not really a "draggy" primer per say

Maybe not loading up that brush enough?
Or not fast enough?

What kind of door, what material, what brush, and how long does it take you?

The door is Doug Fir. I'm using a 3" natural bristle brush (red cover contractor one from SW).

Took about 2 hours. I think that's the problem. I'm too damned slow. Bleh.

Well, the stuff just didn't seem to want to flow. Call me a poor painter, and I'll agree. Its one thing I enjoy doing. I had some time this afternoon and its sorta like fishing for me. Its relaxing.

But, for some reason today, the painting Gods were just thumbing their noses at my efforts. I couldn't not get the stuff to flow, so it seemed to take forever. I was just wondering if its just me (which I sorta thought it was) or some trick to that particular primer.

BTW, its a large exterior door. I have two more to do, but they are smaller, only 3'0" on those.

No trick to that stuff
...except you'll get some dragging if you take to long to paint a door
< cue rim shot >

Ya you'll have to speed it up to avoid that
And anything I've tried marked "contractor" at SWP is over-priced "Home Depot" quality crap

Step up to a nice wide, stiff, Corona

....and don't be shy with the A100, it can take some volume

You don't really want to thin that stuff, but if you still need some help, try a shot of Penetrol

Agreed, though look for a white bristle... they always hold more paint than the black... imo. A100 should flow pretty good with a 3 or 3 1/2 white bristle on the temps you said above.

It probably flows well at first and bogs down as time goes on. Just keep a can of thinner handy, push the brush down in it, maybe even use a brush comb and spin it out every so often.

White bristles seem to shed more than black, and the white's don't seem to clean up as well as the black. Yes, "seem" is my built in disclaimer.

Seem, heh.. no your right.. they do... but you gotta admit they "give" more and seem to hold more paint than the black bristles....

All my personal oil brushes are the white bristle.
Wooster Platinums they are called.

What do you folks do with your used thinner? Does the paint store take it, or do you reuse it somehow?

I've always wondered, but have no idea.

I generally save all my thinner and used motor oil until Earth Day and dump it all down the nearest storm drain.

Earth Day is a busy day for me, because that's the same day I burn all my used tires.

White bristle, black bristle, it's the painter who makes it work, or not...

Hehehe, I seem to get the impression that compared to you guys, I stink at painting, but that comes as no surprise to me. Gimme 20 years to practice and I'll bet my dentures I can paint this door in under 1 hour!

BTW Its a 6-panel door. I'll post a pic or two when done, but no close-ups! Hehe, I can only take so much abuse for my inferior technique.

I figure 1/2 hour per side when bidding
But most painters should giterdun in 20 or less depending on what material/size
I can do it in 7 1/2 minutes, but that's a latex top coat on a 3/0 door
Oils primer takes longer

O.k. MD....what has happened to you! I have noticed a real tendency towards humor lately that I have not seen before. And not half bad either
