Stripping & Restaining Fiberglass Door.

I have a customer with a faded out fiberglass door that was stained with gel Stain. She wants me to strip it and restain it and the sidelights. I have stained a couple of them before but have never stripped one. I have stripped paint off of fiberglass doors before with laquer thinner and Dads, but I am afraid it will tear up the door, and since it is being stained and not painted like the other ones I have stripped I need it to be as close to perfect as possible. This customer is throwing money at me left and right for even the smallest things so i dont want her bringing in someone else to do the door. She is the type who will ask me if I can paint a 1/2 bath for $500 if she supplies the paint and tape, and when i tell her it wont be that much she says it is, she wants to give me that much then when I am finished she always gives me and my helper tips and a bunch of coupons for free food at her husbands restraunt. I think I love her .........

I always strip fiberglass doors with Ready Strip the blue label one with good success. Just brush it on thick, spritz it with water to keep it open. In about 15-20 mins it should come right off. Then clean the door and ready for stain.

Thanks Dan

Have a few like that, gives you the warm fuzzies after some that treat you like trailer trash cause you get dirty. Couple of regulars I leave a bill, then it's like Christmas when the check comes in the mail see how much they tacked on with the" Don't know what we'd do without you" note. One lil old lady always sticks a $30 gas card in with her check. God love 'em---I know I do!

Re: Stripping & Restaining Fiberglass Door.

i strip them often,,,,,i use a water rinseable marine stripper,,,,and i bought a tiny electric powerwasher for the task,,,,i dont want to break out the big powerwasher for a door, and i dont like scrubbing and scaping the doors,,,,,so i use the small powerwasher (1300 psi),,,,,lay out a terycloth towel inside, in case some water sneaks past the seal,,,but thats another benefit with the smaller rig,,,not a lot of pressure or gpm,,,,,,,and i collect the debris with a smal tarp

i charge a lot to do this,,,,so i tell all of my customers with these doors to keep up on them, and dont let the clear-sheild or zars clear to degrade,,,,,i like to topcoat them every 2 years,,,,,,,that will save them some $$$$ and make my life easier
