Re: Steep Hill On Side Of Building, Safety Issue?
I flipped the feet and dug them in and still rode the ladder down. It was a small incline and didnt seem too wet, but had froze and thawed a couple times that week and I guess was a little wet underneath. It was a 24 and before I knew it I was on the ground. Luckily I wasnt injured and now anything over a 16 I drive a crowbar behind one of the feet and yes all my ladders have levelers on them (all should) and I always dig the feet in. Some may think that it takes to long to set that up but it only takes about 5 seconds (literally) to drive it in each time you move it with a hammer with you as you go.

I hate to imagine riding a 24 footer down a wall!
If up very high, damned lucky you were not hurt. |

Re: Steep Hill On Side Of Building, Safety Issue?
Couple years ago for a job similar to the OP, I bought about 10 large tree anchors from HD. They're about 2' long, and look like a giant corkscrews with a metal loop on top.
I screwed them into the ground every few feet next to the house (no sprinkler system), and used a ratchet tie-down to connect the bottom rung of the ladder to each anchor as I worked my way along that side of the house. As I moved down in ladder-height, I shortened the tie down. I now have about 10 giant corkscrews ($5 each) that I'll probably never need again...but it worked out pretty well. Maybe someday I'll plant some trees. |
