Starting Painting Business

Hi, I'm currently trying to start my own painting business, I have a bit of experience around friends/familys house's, and would like to start out pretty basic to gain the experience without getting myself in over my head. I have a fulltime job, however I'm home by around 1pm everyday, and eventually would like painting to be fulltime. I was wondering what is the best way to manage my costs, attain customers, basically just get started.

Thanks

Re: Starting Painting Business

Before considering painting, consider this. Do you know how to paint, i mean paint professionally? I know many people who say they "can paint" but in a professional eyes, no they cant. Not putting you down in anywhere here, but someone who painted a few times cannot go out and start a painting business right away. You must know the ins and the outs about it. You know, solving problems, proper prep, techniques, factors that make up a great paint job. I would consider working part time for a painting contractor, know the trade. See how long it takes to paint things. This is a common problem on this board. Guys are always how much to charge and how long it will take. Without knowing your actual production rates, you are sorta left in the dark when it comes to estimating. As side from painting, are you licensed? Insured? Do you have a actual business? I would look into taking a course about business management. It will help alot.

Good Luck
