Staining Shake Roofs

I have been talking to alot of people lately about replacing their crummy roofs and they have been asking me if I would restain their roof for them instead. I didn't even know people did this, I don't want to do it. But I would like to know what its benefits are, and how much it costs on average, mainly compared to a replacement. Anyone here know?
