Stainable Wood Patch

What do you use that's

1. Stainable
2. Sandable

for pre filling wood prior to staining?

Re: Stainable Wood Patch

Hummm...

It all depends on what kind of wood it is to be stained... and this is for "only" tiny patching... If there are large areas that need patching.. replace the wood...

You could try a product called Zar Wood Patch... it is used for "Lighter" colored wood...but you can mix a bit of stain in with it...

If you are just filling nail holes use the proper putty for that... Apply 1/coat of clear finish first... then fill nail holes.. (no smudges)... Im sure you already new that....

Re: Stainable Wood Patch

I haven't tried anything as yet that will take a stain to match the surrounding wood. I like the crayon-type fillers and also do the filling only after the finish has been applied. If a match is impossible (probably will be), I go darker than the stain as it makes it look more like something in the wood, rather than a filled nail hole.
If you really want to get fussy, you can apply a little stain over your patch after you have filled and feather it in with a small artists brush.
On stuff like dark stained oak, it's tough to beat a wax filler followed by a black magic marker.

Sawdust and glue is a very good filler. White glue not tightbond. White glue dries clear. Saw dust from a band saw is what I find to be the best size. And of course use saw dust from the wood your filling. It sands fairly easily and takes stain like the surrounding wood. I also use the filler sticks but if the sawdust is available I will use it.

White glue may dry clear, but glue doesn't except stain so how do you get around that?

Re: Stainable Wood Patch

The latest edition of Shop Notes magazine has a write-up on a new glue that will take a stain. It's Stainable Wood Glue by Pro Bond. The pictures showing the results look pretty impressive.
Maybe using this, mixed with some same-species wood dust would do the trick.

I used to use "rock hard" and mix it with stain. Used to work pretty well.

Don't know why but the mixture takes stain well. Must be sanded prior to staining. I've used it for years. Try it sometime on a piece of scrap. This is also great for repairing cracked furniture frames. when it dries it takes nails, files easily and is very strong.

Hide glue and the saw dust of the wood you are patching.

Re: Stainable Wood Patch

I've used the glue and sawdust method numerous times, and it's quite effective. Your patches become nearly invisible this way...
