What do ya'll charge. I know, I know it depends on what you do and where you live, but I'm just curious to see the 'variance' if there really is one.
Note: this will only be accurate if painters are polling

Richard posted this on an hourly rate thread, I just copied and changed it a little. Let's get down to business.

The margin is so low on interior painting right now it's not worth measuring the square footage. If you take the time to tape everything, subtract for windows, doors, write up the bid etc somebody else has already done the job.

I walk into a room count windows doors and have a set price per units, walls and ceilings figure by the gallons. take price of materials times by 10. I end up with a price that's in the middle of the High price and the Low price.

Our unit price comes from our production rates along with all over OH.

Why would I use your unit price??? Eagle Bid software which has been around for ages will show you what your unit price will be after you add all your info including your hourly rate. Or you can do it yourself on a spread sheet.

If my first coat is 50 cts my next coat which will take less time will be less.

If you get 60-70 cts a coat for walls per coat---- only after covering, move furniture, setup, clean up then you are doing well.

There are so so many painters who fail at our business because they do not know how to estimate and work for so little they just do not make it.

Trust me times are brutal right now but the strong will survive know your numbers.

My uncle was a very busy painter for 38 yrs but guess what he has to show for it..........nada...why he was to low how do ya think he always stayed busy. Now he is retired and geting SS which is peanuts.....

^^^Well said. FYI, I have not, do not, and will not estimate any residential repaints by the square foot; commercial jobs only.
