Spraying Pressure, Tips And Mostly Technique

I am relatively new to spraying; have a titan 440. i want to try spraying all interior trim and doors that I do. problem is that sometimes it works sometimes it does not quite--get runs and drips all over and have to backbrush.Feel like my major problem is lack of spray training--how should I go about that? I feel like my technique sucks--here is some questions
what tip and pressure would you guys use to spray SW promar 200 semigloss and problock primer?
How much to thin in both cases?
how fast do you atually move your hand?
What's the spray basics? If you brush you start form top down, inside out, leave faces for last etc....how does this translate into the world of spraying?
I have uploaded a couple of pictures...can anyone explain it to me real simple which areas to paint first, second,...
How to prevent droplets form getting to the surface?

anytime i do 2 passes so i hit left and right corners of any surface i get major drips in the center (using 212 fine finish@1800 psi with problock); there seems like there is no way to get the corners of the type of window casing I deal with without some runs

thank you for any help

Mulitple light coats in the trouble areas. And be cautious of the spots like the corners and don't load them up with paint....cause you are hitting them twice.....if that makes sence...

If I was spraying those windows I would......

Mist a good coat on the outside edge.
Then make pass on the inside, and then face.
Then make a pass across the flat and one across the bottom face.

Let in tack up.....maybe go thru and do each one like that. When done start back over and do the same, maybe alittle heavier.....done.

hmmm...i guess my painters intuition was not too much off center
last time i did them tried exactly (i mean exactly) what you suggest (before I even posted this problem of mine on this forum)
a couple of problems: it works only with fast drying primer (like the problock) and it does not quite work with promar
because of these little corners i end up touching up the entire window for runs---i was thinking of just brushing the corners and then do one pass on everything else...i mean...after all i dont get the corners perfect anyways and still have to go back and touch them up (we are talking 80 windows like that)
the faces are 4inches wide--should I use a 214 or 314 gratned i'll be trying to get it in just one pass?

Re: Spraying Pressure, Tips And Mostly Technique

i am too new to spraying but i started with a 214 tip and had too much paint shoot out of it BUT moved quickly. no runs. i sprayed the outer parimeter then went vertical in the middle. like i said i am still new to spraying BUT i had NO runs. i moved very quickly . it shot enough to look like two coats; so i bought a 211 tip and gave the trim and doors a light finish coat. they came out great!! only the metal smooth doors had one run. i just brushed it with a fine, nylon brush and moved on. and this was my first spray;AND

Re: Spraying Pressure, Tips And Mostly Technique

LOL I saw 214 and started to suggest 211 or even 209. Spraying is learned from trial and error. Just get out there and doit.

People I have worked for in the past have wanted me to use the bigger tips for production, but I'd rather use a 211 and 311 for trim.......so it takes what? 10 seconds longer per casing? 30 Doors.....5 minutes longer....for a better job IMHO

I was told the 3 in the 311 tips is the size of the fan......take the 3 and double it......so a 6 inch fan at the optimal distance what ever it is. So 411 would be 8 inches.....211 is 4 inches

As for the 11 in the 311 it stands for the amount of paint.....a measurement I can't remember, but 11 of them lol.

And IMHO yes to the question about covering the whole face in a pass.

Try shooting the sides with the gun fan straight up and down. Just a shot.....a quick squeeze with the gun close to the wall, if that makes sence. I'll try to photoshop your pic and show ya.

i agree
Turn your sprayhead so you are spraying a vertical fan. That way when you go down the door edges it is a straight line. Move a little quicker, you can always go back and hit another quick coat, but it is hard to remove the brush strokes of catching runs and sags.

Re: Spraying Pressure, Tips And Mostly Technique

Also, a rule of thumb.... RTC... Read the Can... most paints today will state on bucket recommanded tip size and pressure... the down side to some of the 440i they don't have the LCD screen to show psi... get yourself a psi 5000 gauge.. hook between unit and hose.. it will help you have constent spray psi with out guessing all the time... also the higher you set your pressure the more psi you are hitting the wall with and boucing your spray off and causing overspray.. start as low as you can... if you get fingering in your spray pattern your psi is too low turn up just till fingers go away... also... the further you are from your trim the less paint is going to tack.. recommand for a 440i is 8-10 inches from wall... I tend to spray at 12-14 inches when I am doing tight trim.. it will cause more overspray but it looks like you have everything covered nicely.
