Spent The Morning With B-I-N

Well I shellacked some butt-ugly furniture that is going to be used in the new house
Dresser, vanity, some odd pieces here and there
They were either real dark, real old, or real unknown finishes so I just decided to BINs 'em

So I can't find my respirator, it's still packed away somewhere
I'm thinking it's not going to take long, and I used to BIN w/o a respirator
It should be no big deal
After all, I used to do it all the time
Whole rooms in fact

And it wasn't really a big deal, everything went fine

But I have discovered two things:

1) I'm beginning to question my long held belief that my lack of brain cells now, is due to any gratuitous and/or excessive ganja intake during the '80s
I am wondering if it is more due to all the groovy '70s dark paneling I BINsed over without a respirator back then when I was young and invincible

And B) Even though I have not had the radio or CD player on all morning, I have The Moody Blues' "Tuesday Afternoon" repeating over and over loud and clear in my ears
I don't even own a copy

Morale:
When using such products, always wear your gas/vapor-rated respirators, even on small jobs, or else you too might be forced to listen to "Tuesday Afternoon" over and over again
Or suffer some other ill effects...

ROLFLMAO

yea that stuff is nasty. I love it though...
I would have gone out and spent a $40 on a respirator.

At least thats better than Afternoon Delight by the Starland Vocal Band.

I used to pick up traffic paint at a place here in StL. The guys working there were nuts. I watched them doing inventory one day, and they had maybe a dozen 55 gal. drums that were unlabeled. One guy would dip his face in the top and take a deep whiff. Then he decide what it was. MEK anyone?

Re: Spent The Morning With B-I-N

I just did a small kitchen for one of my real estate investors this weekend. The tenant burnt the kitchen to a crisp frying some chicken or something. Neighbor extinguished with a water hose. I was dizzy by about the 3rd wall I rolled, and so was the handyman that was there, lol!! I warned the tenants to leave if possible and didn't bother with a damn respirator.

Kitchen looked great in under 8 hours flat including washing walls, priming, and painting...customer happy, decent pay-day, big head-ache that night!

Not to sound preachy or anything,
how come painters hazards are a joke and funny.
Wonder if other trades people joke as much:
Brick layer: "I fell off the scaffold the other day,
I broke my neck it was soooo funny "
Roofer: I fell off the roof and broke my legs

Or should I lighten up?

George, why do you always want to examine the dark side? Do you actually work on sites? Haven't you ever seen or done anything that was funny? Embarrassing?

How about a guy using a small batch mixer dropping the hose. It lands on the lever and hoses him. Funny? Ya! More so if he acts like he has rabies or just stands there trying to figure out what went wrong as the gallons pour on him.

Re: Spent The Morning With B-I-N

When I worked with my dad in his painting business years ago, I was about 17 I think, we were primeing a large bedroom with flat oil, ceilings and all. About half through the job, my dad came down off a stepladder and asked me to open a window, I raised up the window, and we both stood there feeling the breeze, and both of us remarked to each other about how good it felt, and how nice the fresh air was.

Then a strange thing happened, a butterfly lit mysteriously onto thin air just outside of that open window, amazed I reached out to touch the butterfly, and my finger hit glass. The window had storm windows which remained closed. We must have stood at that window for 10 mins talking about the nice warm flow of great smelling air coming through that window, when in fact the storm window was closed.

We then laughed until we about passed out, and I told my dad, maybe we need to get out of here for a while, so we went outside, to take in some nice clean air....or was that the sunroom?

I don't think that the seriousness of the situation is lost on anyone here. I'm sure it will be a long time before slick uses BIN without a mask, for any reason.

But we have all been there, like Teetor says we have all made stupid mistakes.

My partner and I have gotten high off the fumes of BIN before under similar circumstances. In fact that job was the reason we wised up and took a look at what we were doing. We wear respirators with "smelly" latex paints now.

Actually, that's why I started the thread
It was a humorous attempt (or an attempt at humor) to remind all of us about the hazards of our profession

I mentioned that years ago we cared not for the wussy safety suggestions
Being young and invincible, and more macho or tough guy, we disregarded them
I mentioned that I paid a price

I'm sure all the trades on the board have similar situations
I know how the "Safety" = "Wuss" in the minds of a lot of younger tradesman

As we get older, and have a few near misses, maybe lose some flesh, crack a bone, lose some hearing...have a few friends that lose more than that...
We start to appreciate what the safety equipment is and does

I believe that a lot of accidents from more experienced tradesman are because we are older and have "been doing this for years" and "It's just for a few minutes" so we don't don the gloves or ear plugs...or mask

My point was, even though sniffing some BIN for a few hours isn't taking a chance on losing an eye or finger, or breaking a leg or neck, it's still important to wear the proper protection
In this case, lung and brain protection

I needed this little reminder (noticing that even a small amount of BIN inhalation affects you) to remind me of why I have been using the respirator when using BIN-even for small jobs- for the last decade or so

Thanks for the comment George Z
Just in case the seriousness of the situation was lost on someone, and my reminder was lost in the laughter

Re: Spent The Morning With B-I-N

Mine is the cartridge type
I got it at the local tool supply shop
The cartridges are rated differently, for dust, fine dust, vapors, etc...
They get pretty specific, organic odors, gases....
I got the "everything except air" one

...if only I could find it

Re: Spent The Morning With B-I-N

I have had my experiences with BIN but no more using it with out a resperator. Im also gonna try not to work on projects anymore that have anything to do with disturbing lead paint. It just isnt worth it to me.

I was doing a interior restoration last summer and the plaster walls were in desperate need of being sealed. water stains etc...We removed 3 layers of wall paper, We repaired and skimed all walls and I was thinking that I should use BIN to Guarantee the walls being sealed. But I really didnt want to cut and roll this place was huge. I would never spray BIN.

However, I used QD30 from Ben Moore. Not only did it cover just like bin. It was less fumes. sprayed nice, cleaned up nice, everything about it was nice, Only 2 dime size water stains bled through and I sprayed out 11 rooms and a HUGE hallway, stairway, Nice product!!!

Remeber to use the right filter in gun though... It took me a second to figure out why it wasnt spraying properly. It is heavy.

I had a bad experience with BIN when I was first starting out as a painter about 10 years ago... We were working at a resort condo place and I spilled a whole galon of BIN on the carpet, dresser and bed... we went to the hardware store and bought about 20 quarts of anmonia and rented a carpet cleaner... we had to take turns cleaning but we were able to clean everything up except the bed compforter.. that went in the dump... I thought I was gonna die from the anmonia fumes... it wasnt a smart thing to do... We never heard anything about the incident... not even about the compforter... Horrible experience though....

Nice! Thanks for the comment.
That kind of comment should make you embarassed where
you come from.
Talk about the dark side.
Talk to Nathan about not having Canadians here if you have a problem
with that.

Teetor,
I 've been told I have no sense of humour.
There was some discussion about that in a painters discussion board.
Cancer of the liver came up a few times.
I just wanted to focus the discussion to what I think slickshift started.
He just has a better and funnier way of saying it.
