Solid Base Stain Or Semi Trans On Deck

i don't do a lot of decks. I have a deck to do that is way past due. I was going to powerwash and stain with a semi transparent. Their stain is pretty dark. Will i still be able to get that nice color or would a solid base be the best bet?

Use low pressure cleaning
Use a deck cleaner/brightner product
The finish depends on the species of wood as well as the look the homeowner wants. Solid gives better protection and wear, but covers the natural grain. There are alot of variables to take in consideration.

I always try and get the HO to go with semi. Solid is a maintenance nightmare it will start to peel especially in high traffic areas and only lead to more prep down the road the next time it needs to be done. My 2 pennies

Strip, clean & brighten, RINSE, finish with a suitable high quality product, clean every fall after leaves are gone, re stain every 2-3yrs.

That's typical deck maintenance procedures, the key is to wipe the slate clean and start fresh with a quality stain. Then have the HO sign a maintenance program contract. Decks have to be attended to annually, and re coated as needed to achieve it's full perennial potential, cosmetic appearance and structural integrity.
It is not simply an every 2-3yr project! Also maintaining a deck is cheaper for the HO as they wont have to restore the deck every 2-3yrs, only clean, and re coat. And great for us, because you might get the deck exclusively for 10-20yrs?

It sounds like you are cleaning and existing stain?

If so you want to use the same stain that's on the deck now.If you are not sure what stain is on it then you need to strip, brighten and stain with new stain of choice.

If you use a new stain then your best bet is to go with a semi trans parrafinic stain that penetrates deep in the wood.It keeps the wood more moisterized to prevent the wood from cracking.

Well i know in Dallas/FT/Worth the staining buisness is tough lots of competition there. Now Austin has potential and here in Houston there is still tons of work that i can't even get to!

You just let me know if you decide to move to Tx i'll help you with any info you need?

I can't tell w/o laying an eyeball on it
It probably won't look good though, not of it's "way past due"
It could get real blotchy...real blotchy

Best to either strip it (which would mean strip/clean/brighten), or simply PW (scrape/sand if needed) and solid stain it

Obviously the strip/clean/brighten will be more labor/materials then the PW & solid stain

Tip on the semi transparent... it doesn't help with the UV, darker colors or, at least, A color, will last longer than clear, or semi.
