Skim Coating Fragile?

I have skimmed several walls and from time to time I wonder how fragile these coverings are. Comments?

Re: Skim Coating Fragile?

Not as fragile as it seems. Depends on what you use. Most use powder an mix it so they can control the drying time.

Some mixes are: Durabond, this is not sandable and used for base coats. It actually can be ground down with sand paper or wet "sanded" but it's a waste of time. Durabond is very strong.

Setting type joint compound comes with a variety of drying times from 5 min. up to 90 min. Obvious advantages, it's fairly strong, dries hard. Some are more sandable than others but all are sandable. Plus3 Easysand is a good one. IMO.

Toppings come pre-mixed in buckets. Sheetrock and Plus3 are common. These are really sandable but not as strong as a setting type. If you get a setting type compound in a bucket, it will be stronger than topping. Topping is made for easy of application.

There's another topping, it's orange. I don't use it. It's the easiest to use but very "weak".
