Signage Problem

A inspector walked on one of my residential jobs today, was there for small addition. He commented about my sign... 10 ft banner, he said that it was too big... and that I should remove it as soon as I'm off the property. He wasn't mean... just telling me the way it is.
Now, I put up a sign maybe twice a year... it's stated in my contract.... at signing and up too 30 days after... the inspector said he was driving around removing signs all day. Here in Mass we do not have to be hold any license for painting... there is not any.... has anyone ever come across this before?

I think each town just has there own laws concerning signage....

Re: Signage Problem

The towns dictate what size signs a business can use. If this is not controlled home depot would have 200'x800' signs all over town. Without these laws our towns would be full of billboards.

Buy a used trailer, turn it into a billboard and leave it on the job site.

OH, so I guess that 3' x 2' "Kelly Painting" sign I saw in Dedham last month WASN'T you.

You and dougchips are correct about each town in Mass writing their own by-laws concerning signs. Generally those 3' x 2' signs everyone has are OK on a temporary basis (contractor, real-estate, political, etc). This town (Norfolk) is pretty restrictive about signs. Those signs are allowed if you do not abuse the spirit of the law. (Next door neighbor's son had his HVAC company sign on the front yard for a looooong time, and the SOB lives in Walpole - but don't get me going about the laws Air-Works ignores)

Your inspector sounded reasonable.

Re: Signage Problem

10 foot banner I had to read that twice. Never heard of such a sign for a painting contractor on job premises. Dont you think 10 foot is a little much? Is this for residential, i'll be damned if I let a contractor put a 10 foot banner in my front yard thats a little overboard.

Many of the newer residential sub divisions do not allow signs in yards exept for realitors, in my area. We plaster signs on every job dont have to much of a problem.

Is that one of the green ones with the clover? I think every town has a Kelly painting.

Re: Signage Problem

Our town makes a big stink about business signage, temporary or permanent. There was a big town meeting to determine if some dude dressed up as a mascot and holding a sign for a local business was violating the signage regulations. But you can throw a used mattress against a tree with a for sale sign in front of your house and that's fine.

10' banner, reminds me of the houses of ill repute signs that run around Vegas on the back of a truck, it must work for them, does it work for you?

Re: Signage Problem

Like I said, I never really use it.. or any sign.... just felt like it that day.
I will usually put it right on a big house or building.

I was hoping it was used on one of your cool historic jobs.

I think it's appropriate for that job.

Re: Signage Problem

KP, you need some big-a$$ lights on your sign at night so you can see it from the highway!!

Seriously, around here they limit the size of the signs (temp signs such as real estate, builders, remodelers, etc.) to 7 square feet, the size of the typical for sale sign. Then they have half a page of rules on how/where it may be placed. Anything longer than 30 days thay want you to get a permit. Hell, they even have requirements for posting a rummage sale sign here. If it's in the wrong place, they will pull it/them down. They pay someone to drive around and look for these things!

I'm all to familiar with that type of work. I started out on vics and queens, hand scraping to the same level as your pics. Learned to carry extra blades and a file. Used to just wrap a little masking tape around the main knuckles. then they came out with those little steel, profiled scrapers. Please, it's painful to remember. I'd rather admire your work.

I know what goes into those houses, hence, you deserve to hang that sign.

Yah, real nice work. lots of Blood Sweat & Tears.

BTW, how did you legally deal with the lead ??

I know it's tough here in Mass, especially in the communities you work in.

Re: Signage Problem

Heck, with a sign that big, just sew a couple of them together and use them to tent a house for termites...

Couldn't have said it better myself. We own a 12x4 banner that was used once to use across a road in a bike race that we supported. Never thought about putting it on a house that I was painting
