Sherwin Paint Prices& Your Preferance

I have a few questions concerning Sherwins Prices and what you think about my prices. My Rep is very helpful but has told me he cant go much lower.

Duration Ext and Interior=flat or Matte $28, dollar more for a each sheen higher

Cashmere $17, 18, 19 once again with each sheen

SuperPaint Interior and Ext= $ 17, 18, 19

Promar 400= 14, 15 16

Deckscapes solid waterbase=21

I dont do high volume compared to a large company, and I think my prices are fair, but was curious as to what everyone else is paying. I know the more you buy the more wiggle room you have with your rep, but with that aside what are you paying if you dont mind sharing,

Also was wondering, I usaully go with Superpaint for interiors and exteriors whats a comparable product to that thats aimed more for the contractor, Promar 400? And what do you prefer to use if you go with Sherwin Products for Interiors, Exteriors?

Yes, I too would indeed like to see a chart of SW with prices for int and exterior. Great idea.

Re: Sherwin Paint Prices& Your Preferance

I would say that those are pretty good prices. A little over a year ago, I was paying 14.80 a gallon for Super Exterior Satin and now I'm paying about 17 and change. Sherwin-Williams had at least two price increases across the board in the last year that applies to everyone including non-profit groups and government accounts.
What really irritates me with S-W is that their volume discounts dont apply across the board to every coating type as a percentage off. Certain paints like Super Exterior that I use alot of, I can buy at a large discount, and others that i rarely use are much smaller. To my knowledge they dont allways go by the total sales by a company to determine the discount.
I known my S-W rep for years and I can tell you that the store manager has alot of room in certain circumstances to make deals happen.

That's a little better than what I have been paying on the Super Paint.
Then again my paint purchases have dropped that last three years as almost all my painting has gone to subs.

Those are really good prices. However, on the duration exterior, I only get $1.00 discount, period. I get the same thing from SW as Bret does. Good discounts on stuff I always use, and hardly anything on stuff I don't use. SW is a real pain in the ass about discounts....my biggest gripe with them.

Re: Sherwin Paint Prices& Your Preferance

Those are the prices my rep has in the computer for me. Although for a while at many stores they didnt come up right, finally they got it right. Anyways they've always been good about price with me, If the paint came up at a higher price then what was told I got it for they'd mark it down to that or even lower without any questions asked. Always good with prices.

In my area though there is a lot of competion for Sherwin. We have about 7 Sherwin Stores, 10 Ben Moores Stores, Hallman Lindsey a local company which is liked my many professionals over sherwin or ben moore, and ICI Paints along with the big box stores. This might be why the reps are so easy to work with in my area, because I'm doing very low volume at this point.

Pricing looks very good. I just bought a gallon of super paint semi gloss for 30.49 + tax. Looks like i might have to switch back to benny moore.

Sherwin Williams is hosing you. I will probably use SW here in Maine (I wouldn't be able to sleep at night paying for Benjamin Moore. You should ask your rep what the cost is on Duration. I bet it aint much over 4.00 a gallon. The paint companies don't want you to know that with alot of the new technology (which they tout for price increases or adjustments as we called them at Kelly-Moore) paint has become cheaper to make. Then there is re-canning paint. Having two products in different cans, with different labels, marketed two different ways at two different price point. I was with a Southern Californian company that sold it's ext/ low-sheen just this way. I sold the high end can to one painter and the low end can to the dirt bag painter. I can tell you every paint company I've worked for has done this. Then there is one paint company in a home center which uses the same lables but different products. The product in home center paint can changes all the time. Are you aware that Home Depot randomly takes cans from various stores and ship them to the lab in order to keep it's vendors honest? Sometimes their vendors get busted.

I recently interviewed with Sherwin Williams in New England, that is where I got the idea to paint. I was told SW is passed up because it is percieved as being to "cheap", they can get retail for their paint. I used to have customers that bought my high end product for a few bucks off retail. I made a 13% commission on those sales. Then I sold the same product to others painters at a six dollar mark up per gallon (from cost) and made 2%.

I thought about starting a consultant business for painters. Perhaps starting a co-op so that small and medium painters can get pricing that makes them competitive with larger firms.

My most recent position as a rep was for a Lumber company selling Devoe. I know the cost for the dealer, I use to beat Devoe down more. Our cost on a thin film elastomeric was 8 and change. I could sell it for 9.45 a gallon and make money. Frazee and K/M sold the same product for no less than 13 and change. Not only that I actually represented my customers. They got good prices and good service. The toughest thing was getting people to change, take my advice, try other material. Sell the cusotmer. Turn them on to PQI. There are alot of ways to make more money for yourself, take the money you save and use it to get your phone ringing.
