Sherwin Emolsa Bond
Hey guys how you doing?
Say, Ive restored a lot of alum siding jobs, but Ive always primed them... Heres my deal. My rep is telling me I dont need to prime anymore unless its a real bad wood exterior. He says that adding Emolsa bond to my paint is good enough these days.. I dont know if i would trust it on some of these jobs where the alum is completely exposed and/or the oxidized paint isnt or cant be fully removed. Have any of you used this method? Should I spot prime areas where the paint isnt 100% oxidized? Ive always stuck with what works and im always hesitant to try new things - especially so with exterior work. Thanks -Kuba |

Re: Sherwin Emolsa Bond
I have painted hundreds of aluminum houses over the past 15 years. I have never primed any and the only ones that have failed were not properly washed. If you wash 100% of the chalk off the house you do not have to prime.
NOTE: the company I was working for when where aluminum paint jobs have failed used a different crew for washing. when i wash a house it's clean. Emolsa bond is something you use when you can't wash a house properly. I would keep a gallon on my jobsite just to show a picky homeowner if they were concerned. Never used the gallon but billed for it 50 times. |

I have never primed an aluminum sided house, I have never seen one of mine fail. I have even sprayed them with cheap paint form Home Depot (HO supplied) and it didnt peel at all.

Re: Sherwin Emolsa Bond
I was concidering using the additive b/c the whole entire house is in god awful shape. Power washing will not remove it 100%.. I already tested a spot.
Its cheap enought, I think i will use it on the first round just to be sure. Honestly tho, i was more worried about the reliability of the product when mixed with paint. Thanks guys |

Re: Sherwin Emolsa Bond
Tried and true for aluminum siding:
1) Pressure wash- don't be lazy either, get the dirt off. Keep a rolling pole with a scrub brush on the end of it handy. truly clean the surface. 2) Spot prime as necessary with the best exterior primer you can bill them for. oil/ alkyd primers are always the best. *if the surface is that bad, bid for a primer coat. *if they don't want the prime coat and it truly does need it, don't warranty the job. 3) Finish coat & get paid. |

If you make the switch I think you will be happy. A bonus is it is free because every gallon of Emulsa bond replaces a gallon of paint. The Emulsa Bond should only be used in the first coat and needs to be top coated. Jim |

Have used it for over 20 years as well. If you are not sure about the product do a test sample. Add EB to your material apply it to the substrate allow it to dry then test for adhesion. ....... By the way I have never been able to completely remove chalkiness with a powerwash 3000psi.

Re: Sherwin Emolsa Bond
Scrub brush is good on smooth surfaces, but what about stucco? The chalk still hangs up in the crevices.

Re: Sherwin Emolsa Bond
I have been in the painting business for over 35 years. Like the previous poster said, it is not feasible/practical to get "every minute bit of chalk off" . Do the best you can while powerwashing. It will seem clean when you are through powerwashing and then you come back to paint and wipe your fingers against the siding and pull chalk off.
EMULSA BOND IS WORTH IT"S WEIGHT IN GOLD! I have never had an aluminum job peel and have used EB for over thirty years. Great product. You do not need to put as much in the paint as the EB label directs...actually about half that amount is sufficient. Don't second guess on this, IT WORKS! |
