Sheen On Exteriors? Whats Yours?

I use to do all flat... but now lean toward a slight sheen.
Whats your preference?

Also: how many of you have painted an exterior black?

I usually use semi or soft gloss ...seems to shed the dirt a little easier. Have done some black exteriors using Cabots Provt

flatis great when it is clean but does seem to get dusty quicker than a low sheen finish which my choice, dark colors show too much glare when the sheen gets glossy

duration satin on everything most of the time, flat on stucco.

wood work always satin.

all manufactures have differnt names for level of shines it seems, but i like a little shine on everything, i think it holds up longer then flat

semi gloss is what i do for exteriors. Interior trim gloss and high gloss.
Only exterior black i ever get asked to do is front doors.

Re: Sheen On Exteriors? Whats Yours?

Flat covers better, but satin is more durable.
I just let the customer decide on their sheen, most choose satin. I have never done an exterior with semi-gloss, I would kinda be afraid that any imperfections would show up. There is a house not far from where I live that got painted a green semi-gloss over some chewed up looking wood, it looks real bad. Whoever did it sprayed it and had enough sense to cover the sides of the neighbors houses, but they kinda got sloppy after that. Didnt bother to go back and fix where they had oversprayed the white trim. They primed the whole thing first so I drove by thinking that it was some pro's and not a HO, but I dont know now. I cant imagine even a slop artist who would leave a house looking how that one looks now.

My personal choice is Satin, gives a nice protection and very touchupable ( if thats a word ), and a semi gloss for the trim.

Saw a house around here that was painted with what looked like gloss, but prolly semi. It musta been 100 years old, and looked it. Looked terrible.

Our standard is satin unless the customer asks for something different. From my experience, they add at least 2 years to their paint job by using satin over flat.

To all who use satin are you putting that on rough cedar too? I do mostly rough sawn cedar siding and use solid color stain for Cabot, its listed as flat but in the right light and angle it has a slight sheen which is fine for us here.

I think satin or shinier looks terrible on cedar.

Flat is just hard to clean, I will use whatever they want. But if it was mine it will be satin. I don't think I have ever painted cedar, or if I have it was years ago and we might have used flat.

Sher Wms Exterior Super Satin.

Cedar = SWP Eggshell Oil > It stanks, but looks nice! I prefer stain, but the builder we are taking care of right now likes the sheen.

Black doors ... always use Sher Wms BOND-PLEX primer tinted black first. It almost covers white in one coat, and dries in no time flat!

Satin on body, semi on trim.... though I mostly use superpaint so trim is gloss. High gloss on interior trim. My customers prefer it that way, though I will do it flat if they wish.

I just use Wal-mart interior flat for everything, on exteriors I just put some of that Zinnser mildew treatment in it. Sure it doesnt hold up too good, and I have to keep changing company names and phone numbers to avoid living up to my warranty, but thats the price of doing business.

It's people like you that give us highly professional professional painters a bad name.
..and I will now shake my head in disgust at you and your despicableness.

No way I only hire illegals.
I pick em up at the day laborer spots then go to the house and work, then once the HO gives me the check I sneak off and leave the HO to deal with all the pissed off illegals in her yard.
Or sometimes after getting the check I make all the illegals get in the back of my truck so we can run to the bank and get their money for the day. Once we are moving I drive real fast while whipping the truck back and forth on the road, any illegals who fall out dont get paid.
Or you could call someone when the house is complete to come over in an Immigration jacket and yell "Immigration Freeze". That should pretty much take care of them, try not to giggle untill they are gone though so they dont come back and stomp you.
I have come to realize that hiring illegals isnt so bad if you can come up with ways not to pay them.

Everyone knows this is all BS right?
I dont wanna get people pissed thinking I hire illegals and rip off HO's.
I try to play by the rules, I just wish everyone out there did.

I like that word, Despicableness. I have been called many things but never dispicable, I guess Daffy Duck kinda made it so nobody was comfortable using that word. Its a shame really, I do like the sound of it, just not with a lisp like Daffy.
