Semi Gloss On Walls?!?!what Do You Think??

went to job to give an estimate for interior painting job(3 bedrooms and a family room)for a interior decorator i am starting to work for. she started recommending to the customer that she might want to use a semi gloss finish on the walls...i let her know my reservations about using semi gloss on the walls(i hate the look,i think it cheapens the look of the walls)...later she told me that bm and sw is recommending it because of the light refracting off the wall/and something about the color yada yada yada. anyone ever heard of this and what is your opinion on the subject?

Re: Semi Gloss On Walls?!?!what Do You Think??

An Interior decorator recommended semi-gloss??? Usually they are the ones that constantly recommend flat for walls, while I like shinier walls like eggshell or satin finish. Are you sure she recommended semi-gloss? She probably wants one of those matte finishes, and read how its scrubbable like a semigloss - and then got the lingo confused in her head. Semi-gloss? Are you sure?

That is yet another reason they should be refered to by their proper title: Interior Desecrator.

Bah...I'd charge extra if it's semi on walls. Ignorant in my opinion, but what do I know, I'm not a designer.

Decorators usually want semi on the wall if they are doing a faux over it.

Otherwise, I just give them what they want.

The light refracts beautifully into every bump and imperfection. Make sure your prep is near perfect.

Is'nt that the truth. Touch up on any wall where sunlight hits will be about impossible to touch up. I would recomend eggshell giving some sheen and washability. Semi-gloss in bathrooms and kitchens are ok... Yet if she is paying you, give her what she wants. As mentioned before make sure your walls are as close to perfect that you can get.

most interior decorators will recomend semi-gloss or pearl finishes for the reflectivness of the paint.... it can look real good if walls are perfect!! its your job to charge them for the prep!!!!

Make sure you put that in you contract under "expectations". Let her know up front that the sheen will show any & all imperfections. After she signs off on that, give her High Gloss if she wants. But address it !!! Be Clear !!!!

Some companies' semi isn't as shiny as others.

For semi, I do a quick coat and go over the walls with a fine tooth comb. Make it right and finish it up. Nothing like getting it done and then finding something you'd like to fix.

Re: Semi Gloss On Walls?!?!what Do You Think??

I'm not a painter by any stretch of the imagination. HOWEVER, I purposely put semigloss on my walls. I know every painter told me not to do it, but here is why I did. 1) The only room with overhead lights in my condo is my kitchen, every other light is a floor lamp. Thus light is usually dim, so I wanted the semi gloss for reflectivity. 2) Flat paint just sucks for cleaning, and it's almost like you are better off just touching up every smudge and blemish rather than bothering to try to clean it...

When I re-rodeled my kitchen, I used flat paint. I used flat paint because it has more than ample lighting, however I am going to re-paint the kitchen with egg shell for cleaning purposes. Flat sucks to clean.

WRONG! A bitchin' painter is a happy painter not adaquately busy. Just do it.

IMO, satins are more than enough except for kitchen and baths. Cleanability comes with paint quality. I also think Grumpy needs to have his decorator sell 'em a lighting package.

Now I think in a properly decorated room a semi can look real cool. Esp a high quality paint. Cashmere Medium lustre is like semi only the orange peel is not as pronounced. I recently painted my own bathroom HIGH gloss pink (very mellow pink) to go with the existing tiles and it looks pretty slick.

Zip, I cannot believe it. I would never have guessed you to be a semi-gloss on walls guy. I only use satin on walls in kitchens and bathrooms if customers twist my arm. In my area, everyone wants the washable flats (Graham's mostly). I sometimes will use an eggshell in the deep reds for regular room walls.

Guess I was raised "old school". Did many many kitchens and/or baths with semi-gloss oil. I love the smell, the brushability and the finish. Wood trim was invented for oil-base.
