sanding sealer on windows ?

Hey guys,

Looking to stain interior double hung windows for new construction.
I've always used wood conditioner, oil stain, two coats of an oil poly satin finish.

Some other painter at the sw store told me he uses sanding sealer then a coat of poly on top of that. Or even two coats of sanding sealer.
I thought you couldnt put poly ontop of sanding sealer ( all oil ).

Any suggestions ?

For new windows:

Stain
Sanding sealer
Sand the raised grain
2 lacquer coats
Done

More than 2 coats of lacquer will cause "alligatoring" when the temperature fluctuates.

That is my technique.

Ever have a problem with the laquer peeling if it was exposed to moisture?
I like laquer because it dries fast and is pretty easy to spray, but I have had trouble with it in bathrooms and around windows sometimes if there was heavy moisture. I have used Spar varnish before in bathrooms and places that I would guess to be pretty moist, just wondered if you ever had any issues like that.

thanks harness.. but it seems that there would be a lot of taping off for double hung windows.

hey almighty wise painter, thanks for the technique. Is the sanding sealer a lacquer sanding sealer ? also doesn't the lacquer gum up the brush.
I used to spray lacquer , but would not think of brushing it because it used to dry so quick. unless you cut it with something.
let me know ?... I need to get in stain, two coats finish and out in two days.

Flattery will get you everywhere!

But I digress.

Yes the sanding sealer is a lacquer sanding sealer. Do not apply it too heavily because you really only want to raise the wood grain in order to knock it down. I had to use it a few times to get the hang of it because when I spray I am usually applying a top coat, not so with the sealer.

Brush?
No brushy.

Spray the sealer, flush the pump (not as much as you would for storage) then run your lacquer.
Sealer dries as quickly lacquer so the turn around time is as fast as you can run Lacquer through the pump.
With a crew of 2 (and long days) you should be able to complete the job in two days.
Unless you have a large number of windows...add crew accordingly.

I had 38 windows in the Administrative offices of a Fire Department. we started at 3 p.m. building tents to contain the over spray.
Stained, sealed/sanded, and started shooting Lacquer at 3 a.m.
Out by 7 a.m.
That was with 2 guys.

Two very tired and buzzed guys.

The Devil is in the details.

I hate masking for 5 hours only to spray for 1 hour.

It is hard to stretch the joyous hour that I am spraying.
Bliss truly is a short lived thing.
