Runs In Urethane

Help. I refinished a front door using Helmsman Spar Urethane. I'm having a problem with runs thats seem to appear after I left. The last coat I put on I was extremely cautious about runs. Went back to the house yesterday and lots of runs.

Any suggestions or help?

Re: Runs In Urethane

I had one of my guiys finish a door yesterday with an S.W. spar urethane.
Is yours a water based product??
If not was it an older can that had been thinned down?
Was the temp o.k. for working the product?
Could probably add a few but it's your turn

Enquiring minds want to know

Could you be over-brushing?

I've not used the Helmsman, but (what I assume is) comparable products seem to be very sensitive to over-brushing

Re: Runs In Urethane

i use Helmsmans alot. It has one of the best U.V protections out there. The latex ofcourse. You see any interior project that is exposed to frequent amounts of dirrect sunlight will infact lighten / darken or yellow over time, oil even faster. The last one I did was pine boards floor to ceiling with huge bay windows acting as magnifying glasses againt it all day.U.v protection is very important ... ever seen a wood wall that has been beat in the sun over the years? the part getting light looks completely different from the part that doesn't...

I think the other guys hit it on the money... too much product w/ overbrushing... wan't a more durable finish.. then just apply more coats, don'tm try to get two coats out of one.

you might try razor-blading off the big runs, and then sanding back level if possible. Then recoat, but don't load the brush too much, and feather out after.
