Rough Stucco Painting
Whats the best way to attck painting a house that has rough stucco that is peeling? Wire brush or pressure washer? I'll also need to fill some cracks. I will grind them out first, then use Latex caulk?
I plan on using Elastomeric paint, is this the best bet for a longer lasting, non peeling result? TIA - Brian |

Re: Rough Stucco Painting
brian-
do you mean there is peeling paint on the existing stucco? or the stucco itself is failing? If there is failing paint- pressure wash using at least 3000psi. If the stucco is peeling- hammer the loose , failing stucco and patch, after pressure washing. Since your dealing with failing paint and/or stucco issue, a primer would be a wise idea. Use an elastomeric patching compound to fill cracks and bug holes. Then top coat with elastomeric. Be sure to back roll to penetrate entire surface and reduce chance of premature coating failure. I've got two elastomeric jobs going right now and I think its the best way to deal with stucco vs. paint or re-stucco. good luck! |

Re: Rough Stucco Painting
Sorry - I ment to say that the paint is peeling. So I should fill the cracks with a elastomeric patching compound? Never saw this type of compound before.
Thanks - Brian |

Re: Rough Stucco Painting
I use elastomeric patching compound. There's two types-knife grade or brush grade. There is also smooth or textured. Here in the southwest almost all stucco is rough textured. I use brush grade to fill cracks and the knife grade to blend in larger repairs. I usually take a chip brush trim the bristles, force the compound into the joint and feather to match. The biggest problem we deal with is that most compounds are mfg'd on the east coast and the textured compound is almost smooth compared to what we need. I doctor it up by adding 8/16 sand. Another great selling point to this system vs. paint/caulking- is the repairs are almost invisible.
I know ben-moore carries patch in tubes and 5's-dont know if they carry 1's Last edited by simmons; 05-15-2006 at 10:55 AM. Reason: add source |
