Repairing Larger Damage To Doors/trim.. Epoxy?
Hi guys,
Couple doors/old trim on upcoming job have damage. Doors are solid wood, pine im guessing? A few are pretty banged up and have a few about poker chip sized dents in them that are pretty deep. As well as the edges banged in pretty good in a few places. Also a the jambs cracked where someone went nuts driving screws in too hard. How do you guys repair things like this before priming and painting? I was thinking some type of epoxy for the door edges and the cracks in the jambs? And may as well if I have it out for all the large dents. Any product suggestions would be great Thanks guys! |

Bondo, an auto body dent repair system, works well for the scope you described.
It is a two part system (catalyst and filler) that you mix according to the directions on can. Most times you need to apply 3 coats to achieve that pro finish that is desired. Be sure to shape the Bondo with a razor while 'gelling' between coats. Then sand to finish aftre final coat. Sold at HD or auto stores.

Minwax Wood Filler or Minwax Wood Epoxy depending on need/damage
Scrape, sand, clean, fill, sand, prime, feather sand (if spot primed), paint (Repeat fill/sand if needed for deep damage)

I do the bondo on metal doors usually. If it's wood and getting painted, I just use the elmers wood putty.

The best for me is Bondo dry fast and leave you a smooth surface.
Sandpaper with 100 and finish it with 120 or 180. |

Re: Repairing Larger Damage To Doors/trim.. Epoxy?
Reasons that Bondo is not such a great choice.
It is polyester based and will shrink forever. When applied to metal; They expand and contract at different rates eventually loosening the bond. When applied to wood; The same but more drastic as wood moves at a higher rate. Wood also has a moisture content that prevents polyesters from bonding properly. I have figured out how to bond wood to polyester but it is a rather technical process. Ask for more info.

Re: Repairing Larger Damage To Doors/trim.. Epoxy?
Thanks guys, looks like to either go with Wood filler or epoxy.
Is wood filler strong enough to hold up on a door edge? I had always thought wood filler was pretty weak. Maybe wood filler on all the other stuff since I'm assuming its easier to work with and epoxy on the door edges and to repair the cracks in the jamb? Thanks again |
