Refinishing Stained And Varnished Garage And Front Doors

I am bidding a job to have a set of garage doors, and front door refinished. They are currently stained and varnished and peeling badly. Any tip or products you would suggest to help with this job. Any experience on how long stripping and refinishing could take.?

Thanks

Kelsey

Start with wood type and exposure.

Re: Refinishing Stained And Varnished Garage And Front Doors

I just got done with a Mahogany front door and sidelights. they faced west and had a lot of sun damage, but no cracking of the wood.

Here's what I did, which worked well:

1- Scraped loose flakes off.
2- Applied a coat of Stripease.
3- Scrape off stripper.
4- 2nd coat Stripease.
5- Scrape off stripper. Wiped door down with paint thinner. Let dry.
6- Used palm sander to smooth. Hand sand corners and creavaces.
7- (day two) Applied first coat of Helmsman Spar Urethane by Minwax.
8- (day three) Lightly sand, tack cloth, second coat Spar urethane.

The first day was a LONG day. Day 2 about 2 hours. Day 3 about 2 1/2 or 3 hours.

The door was a natural finish- no stain.
