Not sure if you said -

Has anyone refinished stained oak doors with a poly finish, this is exterior, and didn't know how to use strippers?

Or -

Has anyone refinished stained oak doors with a poly finish, this is exterior, and didn't have to use strippers?

Re: Refinish Wood Garage Doors

I've done a lot of wood entry doors. I'd strip with something like http://kwickkleen.com/ , a bio-friendly stripper. Bleach (if required), seal (if required, probably not on oak), sand as required, stain (if required) and start stacking on a quality MARINE varnish (oil and not the stuff that they sell at the box stores).

Reduce the first 2 coats by about 20-25% for penetration and then go to the appropriate brushing/spraying thinner. Sand or steel wool lightly between each coat. 5 coats total will get you quite a few years of protection.
