Painters don't use tape!
We don't use it for everything a DIY'er would use it for. We don't put it around the trim, or around the glass, or around the hinges and many other things...

I'm not a real painter, I just play one at work...But I don't use tape. It takes too long to apply it and remove it. Heck, I don't even use a brush most of the time...

As a teenager my freinds and I were painting rooms for family freind. After numerous trips to the hardware store for more tape the owner took me aside. "If you need that much tape, you need to learn to paint" he said.
He showed me how to hold the brush and I went back to practice. We use painters tape extensively today, to hold up plastic sheets or secure drop cloths, etc. Rarely to protect an adjoining surface.
Good Luck
Dave

I use tape only along baseboards, 1 1/2" to protect the trim from spatter caused by rolling.
I am not a painter though...I am a wall "technician".

I will stir up controversy on this one. I use tape in certain situations. Where door trim meets the wall I like to see a lazor straight line. I can run tape down each side, run a small bead of caulk down to seal so no bleed through then paint and pull pretty darn quick. I'm not sure the best painter in the world could consistently make a line straighter than that. Plus, any guy on my crew can "cut" those lines. This is normally on new construction with white trim. If it is just a repaint I'll normally just cut it by hand. I never tape ceiling lines or anything like that.
My name is Traditions and I am a tape user/abuser

I use tape to hold up my wet paint signs (if I can find it).

The original OP has started a thread and then deleted his statement. Lame.
I use tape for masking off for stripes and what not, otherwise it is almost always a freehand day.

Is the frog tape really worth it? 13.75 a roll? I could hire two mexicans to MAKE me tape for less than that. One to cut the paper. The other to apply the glue and roll it back up!

When I saw the price at SW, I couldn't think of one single use for it. Then I thought of my past vertical striping jobs and if I had used Frog tape, there is no way I could've price it in.
They must be crazy slinging tape at that price...unless it applies itself.

I prefer the green tape myself, use it for base boards, when doing only the walls, wich is very often

I use tape ............
It keeps sprinkles off the base and if the room takes mutiple coats then it is worth it to me to tape it off. I have never used the frog tape, if I needed it then I would charge extra to cover it.

The Frog tape is awesome. It is the only tape that will not pull the 'finish' off of cheap cabinets. No, I wasn't cutting in along the cabinet, I had plastic taped up over them, held on in a few spots with tape.
The blue tape pulls off the finish, froggy doesn't.
If you have an Ace hardware near you, they carry their own brand of green tape for about 1/2 the price and almost as good as the real thing.
What about the purple tape?

Blue tape shield
I use the blue tape as a shield when I tape off the top of the base line to the wall. I never buy into the spatter proof line from any paint producer because everything will have a drip of some kind. If you say you do not experience this then IMO you are not being truthful. This goes out to anyone who might say they have no drips from rolling.
Of coarse you could be slow as snail snot and could not possibly even pry your roller from the wall after it dries?

The type of paint and the roller determine how much splatter and mist you get. Crappy paint + crappy roller cover = half the paint on the wall and half everywhere else.
