Rate Me!

Two door jobs. Back door solid, front door with oval window and sidelight. The high temp was 81* and the breeze was about 15 MPH.

Front door has bright white gloss on brickmould, trim. Also trim around oval and sidelight. Backdoor is gloss only on brickmould. Both are outswing and the reveals were painted to the insulation strips. Inside and outside are 2 different colors.

I R&R'd all of the hardware, painted while still on the hinges, 2 coats all sides in 7 1/2 hrs. including cleanup.

How'd I do from a pro's standpoint?

Re: Rate Me!

Brickmold in FL? Is it finger jointed? Does it look like aass with gloss paint?

On a side note, can the "spiders" read this area of the site?

Re: Rate Me!

Doug, it's common here if you own a CBU home. It's an older home, pre FJ.

If you have 'spiders' reading anything, you need help.

Heck, I'd hire you for about $6.50 an hour and keep the remaining $350.00 as profit.

Re: Rate Me!

Yep, spiders can see here.

4 door sides, 7.5 hours, a bit slow, but not bad for a rookie.
If that included dry time, it sounds a little better.

7.5 hours to do that and I'd be fired. lol

I'd say like half that would be too long really.

Re: Rate Me!

Set up + R&R hardware= 1 hour
Sand/dust/caulk etc= 1 hour
Paint 1 side= 1.5 hour
Paint 2nd side= 1.5 hour
Breakdown/cleanup= 1 hour

5.5 hours is about the best I could do.

Re: Rate Me!

Approximately this is how it worked out, bear in mind that both doors have high security deadbolts and the front door took about 1/2 hr. to get all of the dovetails, screws, etc. to get lined up. I did that one twice while trying not to screw up damp paint.

Prep. 2 hrs. Sweep cobwebs & bug debris, TSP & chip squashed bugs inside of doorframe. Caulk & clean. Exterior is stucco and I always wash down the new caulking.

Trim. Brickmould, trim, bright white. 2 hrs. w/cleanup.

The field makes up the balance. I thought that I was doing pretty well.

Personally, I don't know how you guys do it. I was bored out of my gourd! Only 6 phone calls today and I relished every one of them. That ='s another 45 mins.

Re: Rate Me!

Takes a special breed to like painting enough to do it for money. If I had another trade, or just a very good job offer in the painting industry I would seriously consider crawling out of my business costume.

Re: Rate Me!

We figure where if the most business to be had. Is the weather conducive to painting most months of the year. Hows cost of living? We get the biggest brains, with the most experience here for a research/ think tank.

We figure out the personal first, then logistics, then marketing. We then relocate to city determined by the think tank. We hire only the best, workout a pay scale. Do all the necessary things, and in due time set up shop and go to work.
Oh, one of the first things is how to we setup the partnership, split the profit's, pay the bills, etc

Can you imagine the success that such a company could be. Pour every thing into it for 10 years sell it, buy a boat and go fishing.

I know this is silly...kinda, but for kicks and grins I wonder if we have the nads to just make a game out of it call it SIM Paint Co.

I think it would be a blast if we just did it as a test balloon, like we were really putting it together in real time.......do you guys get it? Or am I a babbling idiot? Input fellow SIMs

Re: Rate Me!

I believe the "spider" referred to is a web-crawler bot... one of the many tools used by large search engines like Google to search out every little nook and crannie of the web looking for information. I believe that is what someone was asking about.

Re: Rate Me!

If the house was occupied and you sprayed an oil to both sides of both doors including all the masking involved to do so, I would approve of the time spent.
If you just brushed a latex or whizzy'd it, there would be lots of ?s.

How would you rate yourself according to the profit for the day?
And the quality?

Were you being paid by the hour on someone else's bid?
Or was this a bid of your own?

???

Re: Rate Me!

joe, it was MY house. I don't really hand paint anything anymore.

The weather was perfect for stacking the paint. I did the trim and reveals first, interior color (lighter) second and exterior base last (I just like to cut in that way).

Spraying exteriors here is really tough due to the tropical breezes. I oversprayed the Olds once when it was parked over 80 ft. away, it was sprayed again when my neighbors house (2 doors down) was painted. I have no idea of what the cleanup was on the house between us was but they had 4 guys there for 2 days. My bill was $135 and I'd just waxed it.

I'd say you did very well. I have 2 French doors I've been working on since June.

I might own a paint contracting company, but I'm not real fond of having a brush in my hand. I prefer hammers and saws.
