Ralph Lauren Suede Paint

Has anyone had any experience with suede paint? Customer wants a liiving room and bedroom done. Is it as much a pita as everyone I've talked to tells me it is? Can it be rolled both coats? Instructions on the can say to brush the 2nd coat in a cross hatch patern. Thanks in advance for any advise.

I have worked with it in the past. yes its a pita. you can't roll the second coat becouse the cross hatch brushing is what gives it the suede look. the last project we did with the suede paint took almost 3 times the amount of time vs regular paint. Also plan on throwing away your brushes as this paint has what RL calls microspheres and the work thier way up into the ferel and can't effectivly be washed out.

Ditto on the PITA. Mask everything off, and its all brush work. Figure at least 3X labor/materials.

Yes it's PITA, and someone please tell me how it can be maintained. You can't wash it, if you rub against it with your arm it shows, you could vacuum it with a soft attachment, but when dust gets on it, even that would cause damage.

Think I'll try and steer her away from the suede. I don't think she'll want to pend 3 x the $ for the job. Thanks for the replies.

I have used it before. I don't like it at all.You can roll the first coat, but then you have to make small x's with the second coat. Make sure that you work kinda quick so it doesn't set up on you.If it does you will get lap marks.I actually have a job scheduled for the 5th that I'm doing that finish on.

Re: Ralph Lauren Suede Paint

We did a large house with it years ago, it looked really good.
It is all brushwork, we didn't make enough money at all.
I would even price it 3-5 as much.

Woz, they recommend you use a dead flat varnish to protect it,
but there goes the suede effect, what is the point?

i love the look but it is a pita...it splatters everywhere and unless they have changed the product...it leave a silver mark if you nick it with something...not a good idea for high trafficed area/or home with kids

The suede is very fast and easy to apply. It does scratch like a chalkboard, which some people like because it starts to get that beat up suede jacket looks. If not, it repairs easily. I would suggest using the mid to dark colors. The light colors don't show the suede look very well.

Re: Ralph Lauren Suede Paint

Couple more questions

Quote:
kbdesigns The suede is very fast and easy to apply.
But still 3X the labor and mats than regular paint?

Quote:
ProWallGuy Ditto on the PITA. Mask everything off,
Even mask the ceiling?

I understand the 2nd coat has to be brushed but to roll the 1st coat do I hve to buy the special RL rollers (9" and a 4'")or will a regular 1/2" nap roller and brush do?

Also, the can says "do not thin" , can I use floatroll with this product?

Thanks again

Re: Ralph Lauren Suede Paint

Sorry for all the questions. Directions on the can say prime previously painted surfaces with RL primer. Anyone who has used this stuff, did you prime or not? Any problems not priming? Walls are in excellent condition now, primed and painted with what looks like BM linnen white flat. New color should cover fine just wondering if I have to now charge for priming as well.

Thanks.

Re: Ralph Lauren Suede Paint

Ralph lauren actually have a specialty finish certification course that the offer every few months..... I checked up on it... it's $1000 per person or $750 if there's more than one from the same outfit. It's a few days and travel/ lodging is not included ... they teach you all of there specialty finishes / you will leave with a set of tools to proform each along with cardboard examples of each design to show your customers / you receive indevidual buisness cards from the company along with certification letterhead. any more than 3 complaints against you for specialty work and you loose your certification...... the best thing is there is only one guy from Mass thats certified. and none from Conn. I called and if you have at least 3 people to do it they will come to you, Kinda neat ... maybe someday.....

Now if they could just teach me how to spell....
