quote for painting exterior steel

Hi fellow paint people. I have a question for some of you. I just bid on a exterior project a couple of days ago and I just found out I never won the job. Either the winning bid was very low or I was very high. Anyway, roughly what should this project be worth? Total: 7500 square feet of corrugated steel. The building is 20 feet high and three sides to be painted. The top 6 feet is one color and the bottom is another. Already painted so two topcoats would be fine. I was planning on renting a scissor lift and spraying the top, paper and tape, spray the bottom. My quote was almost double so I don't see how they can finish it let alone make money. Oh, and I would have to wait 30 days for pay. This is the second job I bid for this contractor and last time I was almost double too. They do a lot of work, mainly box stores and it looks like good work to have but not for the prices. This is my second year in bus., does this happen a lot? I am getting tired of not getting jobs or having to compete to keep my painters busy.

Where are you located. Prices vary a lot by location. Someone near you will be best qualified to answer your question.

Hey that's how it goes in the painting world, you'll always find companies that will low ball jobs just to get their foot in the door, then you have others who are just lowballers and that's that. I have been in the plaster and painting trade for 27 years and it has always been like that, the thing here in Michigan the minute the factory rats get laid off they all become contractors and painting is the easiest to do so more become painters. If you can do a job at a lower price and then once you have shown the company you do good work you can add on extra costs as they come up. good luck.
