Quickest, Best Way To Fill Prefinished Hardiboard Trim Nailholes?
At this house I am currently painting there is hardiboard siding being installed, it is prefinished and the trim is white. The installers (not professionals) were asking me how we can fill the nail holes without having to paint the whole trim package again. The siding has been blind nailed, so that isn't a problem. Hardiboard recommends latex caulking but the installer is concerned about yellowing over time, and he is concerned about mono because its so darn sticky and hard to wipe off anything. He wants me to mix window putty with white exterior oil paint to fill the holes with. I don't think this is the greatest idea.
in conclusion: I need a filler for white hardiboard exterior trim that: 1) Stays white 2) Doesn't need to be sanded 3) Can be applied to just the nailhole without dirtying the surrounding area 4) Doesn't need anything other than filling the hole with it in one step. A finish nailer was used to install the hardiboard trim so the nail holes are quite small. I'm confident enough to do the job with caulking, but not sure what brand is best to avoid yellowing? Thanks in advance for the tips! |

Re: Quickest, Best Way To Fill Prefinished Hardiboard Trim Nailholes?
I've been searching the net for the past hour or so, and I can't find anything dealing with the best method for filling these holes! It would be no problem if it was unfinished because I would fill and paint as I normally do but I can't do that this time!

I would be like Sgt. Schutlz and "Say NOTHING". They got themselves into this mess, they should have followed Hardi's nailing directions. They should, at least, follow the rest of them. Just tell them that it will probably all fall off before the caulk has a chance to yellow unless this is in the Southwest.

I'm a little confused, is it possible to 'blind nail' the trim?
The siding doesn't have a single visible fasterner, just the trim. I'm just curious to know what the best way to solve this is, I want to have it ready as a suggestion if necessary? |

Re: Quickest, Best Way To Fill Prefinished Hardiboard Trim Nailholes?
gah i was afraid of that! I will do this the traditional way if necessary it just seems like such a waste of prefinished trim.
so just to confirm... No one knows of anything that I can use to spot fill the holes that won't yellow and won't require painting of any sort, id also like to avoid sanding as I don't want to mar the texture on the harditrim... |

Mix dap 33 or 53 with spainish whiting or titanium dioxide (white colorant from your paint store. They will give you an ounce in a paper cup). Wipe off all of the excess. If it was finish nailed it will probably fall off in 2 years anyway before the putty yellows. Mike
