Question For The Painting Gurus

This restaurant that I usually do work for, had someone else come in and paint their front display counter. The counter was originally stained and polyed. They just painted right over the poly and you guessed it the paint is chipping off. My question is can anything else short of stripping it down be done to remedy this. The counter is pine wainscotting with a lot of moulding pieces to dress it up.
It looks good painted except for the chipping. I couldn't get in there in the time frame they wanted originally. They said next time they will wait. Thanks in advance.

Re: Question For The Painting Gurus

Stripping it would be the right way..... but you could always sand with 80 grit sanpaper.... take it down so that the poly is roughed up... then prime w/ oil... then 2 coats finish latex. let the oil dry for at least 24 hours though. the better the primer... the better the finish.

I don't think you can get around stripping it. If they didn't have the sense to at least scuff the poly they probable didn't prime either. It's just a matter of time before it all comes off whether you paint over it or not.

Re: Question For The Painting Gurus

Yup....think I just lost a job (we'll see) because it turned out to be well over $1500 for one room with paneling on the walls, and stain/poly tongue and groove boards on the ceiling, stained doors, and stained trim to do it right. I just couldn't stomach bidding the job cheaper and not being able to do the right thing which is sanding thoroughly, cleaning, priming, sanding, and top coating in my situation.

Re: Question For The Painting Gurus

Thanks, that's just what I thought. The other company didn't prime it or scuff it. The owner told me they just painted right over it. Thanks again I'll give him the bad news. There will be a lot of stripping going on I hope he has a lot of ones!
