I always take pity on SW reps that are in areas with long winters.
I have used ox hair a few times and I really liked the way it allowed the oil to flow. It was even better than a white china brush and I recommend trying it.
With the ox hair I was able to achieve a near sprayed look on some trim after cutting the ProClassic alkyd a bit with some spirits.

In the early days of WisePainter I spent a year slinging paint out of a SW in n. Michigan.

Yeah, it really sucked for 8 months out of the year...my Boss was hurting for sales and the commission he wasn't making.

As long as enough paint is applied with an even mil. it will lay out perfectly using the 3/4.
I also believe that the style of nap on the Purdy is a major factor, it is like no other.
I also use these covers. They are a huge timesaver. Ive been using them for 3 years now ever since the big diameter came out and wont hardly use anything else. I was working with another contractor the other day and used his 14 inch 3/4 sher fab and my 9" colossus blew it away. I try to tell everyone to use the 3/4 on walls and they will be fine and wont believe the speed and look but no one listens. To hell with them, Im done preaching to a bunch of idiots that wont try anything new especially when it gives me an advantage.

I like the poles but the frames suck. I am currently switching to the wooster frames poles. Also wise ask your dealer for the new 18 in colossus if your interested, my local Sw just got them in.

I have found myself annoying people around here (the staff apparently) by hijacking threads to preach the efficiency and speed in which the Colossus offers.
Oh the things I could do with an 18" Colossus cover!!!
I could finish an entire 3400 sq ft interior before most of you drink your first cup of coffee!!
How much are they?

I get my collosus cover for $4.50 and could still justify throwing them out if I wanted too but they are actually a better cover once washed. They clean easy, turn on the hose and spin clean in 1 min flat. Of course I dont do it everytime I keep about 10 going and leave them in water until I clean them all at once. Whole routine takes 15 min, and I save $45, no brainer.
Amen!

Re: Purdy Colossus Roller Covers

The 18's are right around double the price here @ around $9 for the 3/4. This is the only way I would switch to 18's put that on a wooster frame so that I can still quick connect and its over. I painted a 1800 sq ft house 2 coats in 4 hrs flat with a 9 inch collosus. Would have took me 8 hours with anything else (9 inch) and people want to tell me a $2 throw away is better. 1+1 does = 2 right?

Best reinvention of the basic 9" roller cover and frame.

Re: Purdy Colossus Roller Covers

Agreed on the cover, disagree on the frame. Ive had alot of the ends come off when knocking off the cover. Also there is a little too much room on the end that allows paint to seep in and then of course later fly out. Im in the middle of switching to wooster frames as they are much tighter fit and seem harder to break.

Sadly I have tossed out a couple few frames after the end cap pops off. If the end cap on the inside pops off I have been able to slide it back and clip it back into place.
The plastic black handled frame is more susceptible to failure, the wooden frames are somewhat better.

I have also noticed that the end caps get paint inside of them and leak out when you have switched colors.
But man they look cool and other contractors always ask me what in the hell I am using when they see it.

Nope, just throw it on one of the frames you already have.

Keep in mind you do have to back roll a little more, but its worth it with how much more paint you get on the wall.

True.
I have always back rolled out of habit to achieve that even stipple and mil. coverage.

I used a colossus roller for a dark red satin color accents paint. No lap marks, smooth finish. I impressed myself!

Re: Purdy Colossus Roller Covers

at a pdca national convention the wooster rep told us (in a class) not to tape the roller covers to remove extra fuzz, but to get them wet and spin prior to use. This also "opened up" the roller cover, and allows the paint to wick more easily to the inner part of the nap. Made sense to me. It also should make cleanup easier, so if you're cleaning these purdy's it might be a good tip.

Re: Purdy Colossus Roller Covers

Well this thread inspired me to try the colossus. I picked up a couple of 1/2" naps to try on some eggshell i will be running. I will update after use.
I was tempted by wisepainter to get the 3/4 but i always use a 1/2 when running eggshell.
