Production Manager

Does anyone have a job description for a Production Manager?

To clarify what I mean, I have 2 key positions in the Production Department: Project Manager and Production Manager.

The Project Manager oversees an individual job. He is on site and working. Some might call him a Foreman or Supervisor. He has the final responsibility for the project.

The Production Manager oversees multiple Project Managers. He acts as a liason between sales and the Project Manager. He is responsible for insuring that the proper manpower, materials, and equipment are on the job.

I've had Project Managers for years. But we are now taking on more and bigger projects, and I need someone to oversee multiple projects. I simply don't have the time anymore to keep an eye on 5 crews.

Brian, tell me what you'll pay, and I'll tell you exactly what I'll do for it.

Re: Production Manager

I have a production manager. His job is not so simple. As a manager, he is to do a little of everything within his department.

He gets to the office early, calls subs to make sure they are on schedule and not drunk or something , then he makes sure materials are on order for the upcoming jobs, then he goes out onto the road to inspect jobs in progress or completed, and also to remeasure jobs before they get scheduled and ordered to make sure the sales reps didn't under sell. He also does alot of running around when jobs are short and inspects fixes some warranty repairs. Most warranty claims are frivilous which is why we don't waste the sub's time.

He is paid a base salary with a commission based on gross profit.

I'm still trying to figure that part out. I like Grumpy's approach of a salary with a commission.

This is new territory for me. I'm trying to figure out what I want this person to do, and then I can figure out what he will be worth.

If you tell me what you'll do, I could tell you what I'd pay

That reminds me of an old joke:

An old man asks a young girl if she will sleep with him for $100K. Yes, she says.

How about $100, he asks.

No, what kind of woman do you think I am?

We know what kind of woman you are, he responds. We are just negotiating the price.

I often wish I could entice a bunch of you to move to Houston. We could build a killer company.
