Priming MDF Edges
Hello:
We're re-building a set of stairs and planning to use MDF for the risers. The stairs are boxed on the sides so the MDF edges won't show. Nonetheless, I want to seal them before priming and painting. I see a lot of mention on the internet about applying a thinned carpenters glue solution to the edging first, followed by a good oil based primer. I'm hesitant to use anything water based around MDF - including a thinned glue solution. Anyone have any experience with priming MDF, particularly cut edges? Thanks. |

Re: Priming MDF Edges
Thinning the glue is fine, - - it makes it more workable and it penetrates further.
In your case, though, - - I don't see it as necessary. Just prime the edges with oil base. It's even OK to prime with latex, - - but then you have to lightly sand the swelled fibers. |

Re: Priming MDF Edges
I would never use MDF as a riser on a staircase. Won't take the abuse.
